REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Dakota, Durango
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the stabilizer bar link from the lower suspension arm.
  6.  
  7. Remove the shock absorber.
  8.  
  9. Compress the coil spring, using either the factory tool or a generic substitute suitable for the job.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lower ball stud nut and separate the ball stud from the knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Relieve the spring tension. Remove the compressor.
  14.  
  15. Pull down on the lower suspension arm to remove the spring.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Note that the ramped or open end of the coil spring is the BOTTOM.
  2.  
  3. Tape the isolator pad to the top of the coil spring. Position the spring in the lower suspension arm well, being sure that it is properly seated.
  4.  
  5. Compress the spring.
  6.  
  7. Install the lower ball stud into the knuckle and tighten the nut to 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Remove the spring compressor.
  10.  
  11. Install the stabilizer bar link to the lower suspension arm and tighten the nut to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the shock absorber, wheel, and lower the vehicle.
  14.

Ram With Independent Front Suspension
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake caliper and rotor.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the tie rod from the steering knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the stabilizer bar link from the lower suspension arm.
  10.  
  11. Support the lower suspension arm outboard end with a suitable jack. Place the jack under the arm in front of the shock mount.
  12.  
  13. Remove the cotter pin and nut from the lower ball stud. Separate the ball stud assembly.
  14.  
  15. Remove the lower shock bolt.
  16.  
  17. Lower the jack and suspension arm until the spring tension is relieved. Remove the spring and rubber isolator.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Install the rubber isolator on top of the spring.
  2.  
  3. Position the spring into the upper spring seat and lower suspension arm.
  4.  
  5. Raise the suspension arm with a jack and position shock into the suspension arm mount. Install the shock bolt and tighten it to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the steering knuckle on the lower ball stud. Install the lower ball stud and tighten to:

    LD: 95 ft. lbs. (129 Nm)
     
    HD: 110 ft. lbs. (136 Nm)
     

  8.  
  9. Replace cotter pin and remove jack.
  10.  
  11. Install the stabilizer bar link on the lower suspension arm. Install the grommet, retainer and nut and tighten to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install tie rod on steering knuckle and tighten nut to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).
  14.  
  15. The remainder of the procedure is the reverse of removal.

Ram With Link/Coil Suspension
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Position a hydraulic jack under the axle to support it.
  4.  
  5. Paint or scribe alignment marks on the lower suspension arm cam adjusters and axle bracket for installation reference.
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper suspension arm and loosen the lower suspension arm bolts.
  8.  
  9. Matchmark and disconnect the driveshaft from the axle on 4WD models.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the track bar from the frame rail bracket.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the drag link from the pitman arm.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the stabilizer bar link and shock absorber from the axle.
  16.  
  17. Lower the axle until the spring is free from the upper mount. Remove the coil spring.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Position the coil spring on the axle pad.
  2.  
  3. Raise the axle into position until the spring seats in the upper mount.
  4.  
  5. Connect the stabilizer bar links and shock absorbers to the axle bracket. Connect the track bar to the frame rail bracket.
  6.  
  7. Install the upper suspension arm.
  8.  
  9. On 4WD models, reconnect the driveshaft.
  10.  
  11. Install the drag link to the pitman arm and tighten the nut to 185 ft. lbs. (251 Nm). Use a new cotter pin.
  12.  
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the remaining components to the specifications given in the chart.
