Front Parking Brake Cable

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Dakota
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the cable adjusting nut.
  4.  
  5. Disengage the front cable from the rear or extension cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the support cable from the front cable.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the left kick panel.
  12.  
  13. Fold back the carpet and remove the cable grommet from the floorpan.
  14.  
  15. Engage the parking brake pedal and disconnect the cable from the pedal assembly.
  16.  
  17. Work the cable and housing assembly through the floor pan.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Reverse the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Adjust cable as outlined in that section.

Durango
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. On 1998 models, remove the cable-adjusting nut. On all others, loosen the nut, but do not remove it.
  4.  
  5. Pull the cable through the body mount.
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the left kick panel.
  10.  
  11. Fold back the carpet and remove the cable grommet from the floorpan.
  12.  
  13. Engage the parking brake pedal and disconnect the cable from the pedal assembly.
  14.  
  15. Work the cable and housing assembly through the floor pan.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Reverse the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Adjust cable as outlined in that section.
  4.

1997-99 Ram
  1. Remove the knee bolster.
  2.  
  3. Release the parking brake.
  4.  
  5. Raise the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the tensioner nut to create slack in the front and intermediate cables.
  8.  
  9. Disengage the front cable from the extension cable connector.
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Roll back the carpet and loosen the cable grommet and retainer. Then pull the cable through the floorpan grommet.
  14.  
  15. Disengage the cable from the arm on the foot pedal assembly.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Insert cable through the floorpan grommet and connect to pedal assembly arm.
  2.  
  3. Hook cable T-connector in arm on pedal assembly.
  4.  
  5. Secure floorpan grommet/seal and cable retainer.
  6.  
  7. Realign carpet and install knee bolster.
  8.  
  9. Engage front cable and extension cable in cable connectors. Make sure right rear cable is secured in tensioner connector.
  10.  
  11. Adjust the cable as outlined in that section.

2000 Ram
  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the adjusting nut to provide slack in the cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front cable from the connector.
  6.  
  7. Compress the cable end fitting at underbody bracket and remove the cable from the bracket.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Push the ball end of the cable out of the pedal clevis with a small screwdriver.
  12.  
  13. Compress the cable end fitting at the pedal bracket and remove the cable.
  14.  
  15. Remove the left cowl trim and sill plate.
  16.  
  17. Pull up the carpet and remove the cable from the body clip.
  18.  
  19. Pull up on the cable and remove it with the body grommet.
  20.  

To install:

  1. From inside the vehicle, insert the cable end fitting into the hole in pedal assembly.
  2.  
  3. Seat the cable retainer in the pedal assembly.
  4.  
  5. Engage the cable ball end in the clevis on pedal assembly.
  6.  
  7. Route the cable along the top of the wheelwell and clip in place.
  8.  
  9. Route cable through the floorpan and install the body grommet.
  10.  
  11. Replace the carpet and left cowl trim and sill plate.
  12.  
  13. Raise the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Route the cable through the underbody bracket and seat the cable housing retainer in bracket.
  16.  
  17. Connect the cable-to-cable connector.
  18.  
  19. Adjust the cable as outlined in that section.
