Rear Parking Brake Cables

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1997-99 Dakota
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheels.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the tensioner adjuster nut.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the right rear cable from the front cable or extension cable, depending on set-up.
  8.  
  9. Remove the right cable from the tensioner.
  10.  
  11. Compress the tabs on each cable retainer with hose clamp or pliers and release the hose clamp or pliers.
  12.  
  13. Remove the right cable from the frame bracket and left cable from the adjuster nut bracket.
  14.  
  15. Remove the brake drum and shoe assembly.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the rear cable from the lever on the secondary brake shoe and remove the cable spring.
  18.  
  19. Compress the tabs on each cable retainer with hose clamp or pliers. Release the hose clamp or pliers and remove the cable from the brake support plate.
  20.  
  21. Remove the cable from the vehicle.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Insert the cable through the support plate hole and cable guide until the cable retainer tabs lock into place. Pull on the cable to ensure it is locked into the support plate.
  2.  
  3. Lube the parking brake lever pivot points.
  4.  
  5. Slide the spring over the cable, then connect the spring and cable to the parking brake lever. Ensure that the spring and cable is seated in the lever.
  6.  
  7. Install the parking brake lever to the secondary brake shoe.
  8.  
  9. Install the brake assembly on the support plate. Ensure that the parking brake lever strut and spring are properly positioned before installing the return springs.
  10.  
  11. Adjust the brakes. Refer to that section.
  12.  
  13. Install the cables into the frame brackets until the cable retainer tabs lock in place.
  14.  
  15. Install the right cable to tensioner and left cable to front cable or extension cable.
  16.  
  17. Adjust the parking brake.

2000 Dakota
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheels.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the tensioner adjuster nut.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the right rear cable from the extension cable.
  8.  
  9. Remove the right cable from the frame clip and pull the cable housing through the left cable connector.
  10.  
  11. Remove the left cable connector from the left cable.
  12.  
  13. Pull both cables through the cable bracket.
  14.  
  15. Remove the right cable mounting retainers from the differential housing.
  16.  
  17. Remove the brake drums.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect each cable from the park brake lever.
  20.  
  21. Compress the tabs on the cable housing retainer at the brake support plate.
  22.  
  23. Remove the cables.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Push each cable housing through the brake support plate hole until the cable housing retainer tabs lock into place.
  2.  
  3. Pull back on the end of the cable. Then push the cable in to engage the cable in the park brake lever. Pull on the cable end to ensure it is attached.
  4.  
  5. Install the brake drums.
  6.  
  7. Install the cable mount retainers.
  8.  
  9. Push the cables housing through the cable bracket.
  10.  
  11. Install the left cable onto the cable connector.
  12.  
  13. Push the right cable housing through the left cable connector and connect the cable to the extension cable.
  14.  
  15. Install the wheels.
  16.  
  17. Adjust the parking brake.
  18.  

Durango
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheels.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the tensioner adjuster nut.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right cable from the tensioner and pull the cable housing through the left cable connector.
  8.  
  9. Remove the left cable connector.
  10.  
  11. Pull both cables through the cable bracket.
  12.  
  13. Remove the right cable mounting retainer.
  14.  
  15. Remove the brake drums.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect each cable from the parking brake lever.
  18.  
  19. Compress the tabs on each cable housing retainer at the brake support plate.
  20.  
  21. Remove the cables.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Push each cable housing through the brake support plate hole until the cable housing retainer tabs lock into place. Pull on the cable housing to ensure it is locked.
  2.  
  3. Pull back on the end of the cable. Then push the cable in to engage the cable in the park brake lever. Pull on the cable end to ensure it is attached to the park brake lever.
  4.  
  5. Install the brake drums.
  6.  
  7. Install the right cable mounting retainers.
  8.  
  9. Push the cables housing through the cable bracket.
  10.  
  11. Install the left cabled onto the cable connector.
  12.  
  13. Push the right cable housing through the left cable connector and connect the cable to the tension rod.
  14.  
  15. Install the wheels.
  16.  
  17. Adjust the parking brake.

1997-99 Ram, 2000 Ram 1500
  1. Raise the vehicle and remove the rear wheels and brake drums.
  2.  
  3. Remove the secondary brake shoe and disconnect the cable from the parking brake lever.
  4.  
  5. Compress the rear cable retainer with hose clamp or pliers and pull the cable out of the support plate.
  6.  
  7. Remove one or both cables reaction bracket on left rear frame rail.
  8.  
  9. Disengage the rear cable from the tensioner.
  10.  
  11. Compress the cable retainer with hose clamp or pliers and slide the cable out of the bracket.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Route the new cable to the rear brake support plate.
  2.  
  3. Insert the cable through the support plate, seat cable retainers and attach cable to parking brake lever on the secondary brake shoe.
  4.  
  5. Install the brake shoe assembly.
  6.  
  7. Seat cable in body clips, reaction bracket and frame bracket.
  8.  
  9. Connect the cable to the tensioner.
  10.  
  11. Adjust the cable.
  12.  
  13. The remainder of the procedure is the reverse of removal.

2000 Ram 2500/3500
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the cable adjuster nut.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear cables from the cable tensioner bracket.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right rear cable O-ring. Then pull the cable through the frame bracket.
  8.  
  9. Pull the right rear cable through the brake hose bracket and remove the cable retainers from the axle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear wheels and brake drums.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect each cable from the park brake lever.
  14.  
  15. Remove the cable guide spring.
  16.  
  17. Compress the cable tabs on each cable end fitting at the brake support plate.
  18.  
  19. Remove the cables from the brake support plates.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Install the cable guide spring and brake drums.
  2.  
  3. First, pull back on the cable, and then push the cable through the brake support plate hole, to engage the cable in the parking brake lever. Pull on the cable end to ensure it is attached to the parking brake lever.
  4.  
  5. Push each cable housing through the brake support plate hole until the cable end fitting tabs lock into place. Pull to make sure.
  6.  
  7. Install the right cable retainers on the axle. Then push the right cable through the hole in the brake hose bracket.
  8.  
  9. Push both cables through the frame bracket. Push the left cable until the cable end fitting tabs lock into place. Install the O-ring on the right cable.
  10.  


NOTE
The right cable must be installed in the top hole of the bracket and the left cable in the bottom hole.

  1. Install the cables onto the cable tensioner bracket and install the cables into the cable connectors.
  2.  
  3. Adjust the parking brake. The remainder of the procedure is the reverse of removal.

ADJUSTMENT




NOTE
Adjustment is only needed when the tensioner or a cable has been replaced or disconnected for service. To avoid faulty operation, only the procedure below should be carried out.

  1. Brakes must be operating correctly and properly adjusted.
  2.  
  3. Check that the parking brake cables operate freely.
  4.  
  5. Raise the vehicle and check that the wheels turn without drag with the parking brake released.
  6.  
  7. Apply the parking brake fully.
  8.  
  9. Mark the tensioner rod 1 / 4 in. (6.35mm) from the edge of the tensioner (Dakota, Durango), or mark it from tensioner bracket (Ram). There may be a factory mark already here.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the adjusting nut on the tensioner (Dakota, Durango) or equalizer (Ram) until the mark is no longer visible.
  12.  
  13. Release the parking brake and ensure that the wheels turn without drag.
  14.
