  1. Remove the splash shield (if equipped). Disconnect the vacuum line(s) at the distributor.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the pickup lead wire connector or connectors from the wiring harness.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the clips or screws that retain the distributor cap and lift off the cap.
  6.  
  7. Bump the engine around until the rotor is pointing at no. 1 cylinder firing position and the timing marks on the front case and crank pulley are aligned. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery.
  8.  
  9. Mark the distributor body and the engine block to indicate the position of the distributor in the block. Mark the distributor body to indicate the rotor position. These marks are used as guides when installing the distributor.
  10.  
  11. Remove the distributor hold-down bolt and bracket. Carefully lift the distributor from the engine. The shaft may rotate slightly as the distributor is removed. Make a note of where the movement stops. That point is where the rotor must point when the distributor is reinstalled into the block.

INSTALLATION



Engine Not Disturbed
  1. If the crankshaft has not been rotated while the distributor was removed from the engine, use the reference marks made before removal to correctly position the distributor in the block. The shaft may have to be rotated slightly to engage the came gear (inline 6-cylinder) or intermediate shaft gear (V6 and V8).

  3. If the crankshaft was rotated or otherwise distributed (e.g. during engine rebuilding) after the distributor was removed, proceed as follows:

Engine Disturbed
170, 198 AND 225 ENGINES
  1. Remove no. 1 spark plug and, with your thumb plugging the hole, rotate the engine until no 1 piston is up on the compression at top dead center. You'll feel the pressure of the compression stroke with your thumb and the 0 mark on the crankshaft pulley hub will be aligned with the timing pointer.
  2.  
  3. Turn the rotor to a position just ahead of the no. 1 distributor cap terminal.
  4.  
  5. Lower the distributor into the opening engaging the distributor gear with the drive gear on camshaft. With the distributor fully seated in the engine, the rotor should be under the cap no. 1 tower.
  6.  
  7. Install the cap, tighten the hold-down bracket bolt. Connect the wiring and the vacuum hose. Check the timing with a timing light. Adjust if necessary.
  8.  

V6 AND V8 ENGINES
  1. Rotate the crankshaft until no. 1 cylinder is at top dead center (TDC) of the compression stroke. To do this, remove the spark plug from cylinder no. 1 and place your thumb over the hole. Slowly turn the engine by hand in the normal direction of rotation until compression is felt at the hole. The 0 mark on the crankshaft pulley should be aligned with the pointer on the timing case cover.

  3. Hold the distributor over the mounting pad on the cylinder block so that the distributor body flange coincides with the mounting pad and the rotor points to the no. 1 cylinder firing position.
  4.  
  5. Install the distributor while holding the rotor in position, allowing it to move only enough to engage the slot in the drive gear.
  6.  
  7. Install the cap, tighten the hold-down bracket bolt. Connect the wiring and vacuum hose. Check the timing with a timing light. Adjust if necessary.
