Knuckle and Spindle

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Drum Brakes
LEAF SPRINGS
  1. Support the brake pedal in the UP position.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the front end on jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheels.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake drum/hub.
  8.  
  9. Remove the brake backing plate bolts.
  10.  
  11. Lift the whole backing plate/brake shoe assembly off the knuckle and wire it out of the way. DO NOT DISCONNECT THE BRAKE LINE!
  12.  
  13. Separate the knuckle and knuckle arm.
  14.  
  15. Remove the pivot pin locking screw or pin.
  16.  

Some models have two locking screws.

  1. Remove the upper pivot pin oil seal plug (steel disc) and drive the pivot pin down, forcing the lower seal plug out. The pivot thrust bearing can now be removed.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Install the knuckle assembly on the axle and install the backing plate and new dust seal. Install the upper plate mounting bolts and torque them to 55 ft. lbs. on 100 and 200 series; 85 ft. lbs. on 200HD and 300 series.

  3. Install the lower mounting bolts and torque them to 210 ft. lbs. on 100 and 200 series; 225 ft. lbs. on 200HD and 300 series.
  4.  
  5. Install the hub/drum assembly and adjust the wheel bearings.
  6.  
  7. Install the wheels.
  8.  

COIL SPRINGS
  1. support the brake pedal in the UP position.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the front end on jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheels.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake drum/hub.
  8.  
  9. Support the lower control arm with a floor jack.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the tie rod from the knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the brake backing plate bolts.
  14.  
  15. Lift the whole backing plate/brake shoe assembly off the knuckle and wire it out of the way. DO NOT DISCONNECT THE BRAKE LINE!
  16.  
  17. Re-install and tighten the lower backing plate mounting bolts in the steering knuckle and knuckle arm.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the ball joints from the knuckle and knuckle arm.
  20.  
  21. Separate the knuckle and knuckle arm.
  22.  

To install:
  1. Install the knuckle assembly on the control arms and install the backing plate and new dust seal. Install the upper plate mounting bolts and torque them to 55 ft. lbs. on 100 and 200 series; 85 ft. lbs. on 200HD and 300 series.
  2.  
  3. Install the lower mounting bolts and torque them to 210 ft. lbs. on 100 and 200 series; 225 ft. lbs. on 200HD and 300 series.
  4.  
  5. Connect the ball joints. Torque the nuts to 135 ft. lbs. on 100 and 200 series. On 300 series, the torque is 175 ft. lbs. Always use new cotter pins.
  6.  
  7. Connect the tie rod end and torque the nut to 45 ft. lbs. on the 100 and 200 series; 55 ft. lbs. on the 300 series. Install a new cotter pin.
  8.  
  9. Install the hub/drum assembly and adjust the wheel bearings.
  10.  
  11. Install the wheels.
  12.  

Disc Brakes

  1. Support the brake pedal in the UP position.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the front end on jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheels.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake calipers and suspend them out of the way. DO NOT DISCONNECT THE BRAKE LINE! Remove the inner pad.
  8.  
  9. Remove the hub/rotor assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the brake splash shield.
  12.  
  13. Support the lower control arm with a floor jack.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the tie rod from the knuckle.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the ball joints from the knuckle.
  18.  
  19. Unbolt the brake adapter from the knuckle.
  20.  

To install:
  1. Install the adapter on the knuckle. Torque the bolts to 100 ft. lbs.
  2.  
  3. Align the knuckle arm and the knuckle. Torque the mounting bolts to 215 ft. lbs.
  4.  
  5. Install the knuckle assembly on the control arms and connect the ball joints. Torque the nuts to 135 ft. lbs. On 1972-74 300 series, the torque is 175 ft. lbs. Always use new cotter pins.
  6.  
  7. Connect the tie rod end and torque the nut to 45 ft. lbs. Install a new cotter pin.
  8.  
  9. Install the splash shield and new dust seal. Torque the bolts to 16 ft. lbs.
  10.  
  11. Install the hub/rotor assembly and adjust the wheel bearings.
  12.  
  13. Install the caliper and pads.
  14.  
  15. Install the wheels.
  16.
