REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Chrysler 8 3 / 8 ", 8 3 / 4 ", 9 1 / 4 ", 9 5 / 8 " Axles

  1. Raise and support the rear end on jackstands placed under the frame.
  2.  
  3. Prop the brake pedal in the UP position.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheels and brake drums.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the brake lines.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the parking brake cables.
  10.  
  11. Matchmark the driveshaft and flange.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the driveshaft at the flange and position it out of the way.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the shock absorbers at the axle.
  16.  
  17. Position a floor jack under the axle to take up the weight.
  18.  
  19. Remove the spring U-bolt nuts and lower the axle.
  20.  

To install:
  1. Raise the axle into position.
  2.  
  3. Install the spring U-bolt nuts.
  4.  
  5. Connect the shock absorbers at the axle. Torque the nuts to 55 ft. lbs.
  6.  
  7. Connect the driveshaft at the flange.
  8.  
  9. Connect the parking brake cables.
  10.  
  11. Connect the brake lines.
  12.  
  13. Install the wheels and brake drums.
  14.  
  15. Bleed the brakes.
  16.  

Observe the following torques for U-bolt nuts:



1 / 2 -20: 62-70 ft. lbs.
 
3 / 4 -16: 175-225 ft. lbs.
 
9 / 16 -18: 120-130 ft. lbs.
 
5 / 8 -18: 175-200 ft. lbs.
 

Dana 60 and 70 Axles

  1. Raise and support the rear end on jackstands placed under the frame.
  2.  
  3. Prop the brake pedal in the UP position.
  4.  
  5. Remove the axle shafts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the wheels and drums.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the brake line and the flexible line connector.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the parking brake cables.
  12.  
  13. Matchmark the driveshaft and flange.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the driveshaft at the flange and position it out of the way.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the shock absorbers at the axle.
  18.  
  19. Position a floor jack under the axle to take up the weight.
  20.  
  21. Remove the spring U-bolt nuts and lower the axle.
  22.  

To install:
  1. Raise the axle into position.
  2.  
  3. Install the spring U-bolt nuts. Torque the nuts to 200 ft. lbs.
  4.  
  5. Connect the shock absorbers at the axle. Torque the nuts to 55 ft. lbs.
  6.  
  7. Connect the driveshaft at the flange.
  8.  
  9. Connect the parking brake cables.
  10.  
  11. Connect the brake lines.
  12.  
  13. Install the drums and wheels. On 60 series axles, torque the lug nuts to 225 ft. lbs for cone-shaped nuts; 325 ft. lbs. for flanged nuts. On 70 series axles, torque the lug nuts to 400-450 ft. lbs.
  14.  
  15. Bleed the brakes.
  16.  
  17. Install the axle shafts.
  18.  
  19. Refill the housing with fluid.
  20.
