REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1967 Models
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2.  
  3. Rotate the horn button 1 / 4 turn counterclockwise and remove the button, rubber grommet and horn contact ring.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the horn wire.
  6.  
  7. Remove the three screws and spacers that attach the horn button housing to the column and remove the horn button and housing.
  8.  
  9. Matchmark the steering wheel hub and column.
  10.  
  11. Remove the nut from the end of the steering shaft.
  12.  
  13. Remove the steering wheel with a puller.
  14.  
  15. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the nut to 24 ft. lbs.
  16.  

1968-71 Models

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2.  
  3. Pull the horn button off its spring clips.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the horn wire.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 3 screws and lift out the horn switch.
  8.  
  9. Matchmark the steering wheel and shaft.
  10.  
  11. Remove the steering wheel retaining nut from the shaft.
  12.  
  13. Using a puller, remove the steering wheel.
  14.  
  15. When installing the steering wheel, align the matchmarks and torque the nut to 27 ft. lbs.
  16.  

1972-77 Models
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the horn button by removing the two screws from underneath.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the horn wire from the horn switch terminal.
  6.  
  7. Remove three screws and lift out the horn switch and button or pad retainer assembly.
  8.  
  9. Back the steering wheel retaining nut off the top of the shaft.
  10.  
  11. Install a steering wheel puller and draw the steering wheel from the steering shaft splines.
  12.  
  13. Remove the steering wheel nut and pull the steering wheel off the steering shaft.
  14.  
  15. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the nut to 27 ft. lbs.

1978-88 Models

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2.  
  3. Working through the access holes in the back of the wheel, push the horn pad off. DO NOT PRY THE PAD OFF!
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the horn wire.
  6.  
  7. Matchmark the steering wheel and shaft.
  8.  
  9. Remove the steering wheel retaining nut.
  10.  
  11. Using a puller, remove the steering wheel from the shaft. NEVER HAMMER THE SHAFT TO FREE THE WHEEL!
  12.  
  13. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the nut to 60 ft. lbs. on models through 1984; 45 ft. lbs. on 1985-88 models.
