Ignition Coil

TESTING

Prior to testing the coil, perform a secondary spark test. If spark occurs at the spark plug, the coil is functioning properly.

  1. Turn the ignition OFF .
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.
  5. Perform a visual inspection of the coil. If the coil is cracked or damaged, the coil is faulty.
  6.
  7. Label and disconnect the electrical harness from the ignition coil.
  8.
  9. Inspect the harness connector and ignition coil terminals for dirt, corrosion or damage. Repair as necessary.
  10.
  11. Using an ohmmeter, measure coil primary resistance between the ignition coil terminals. Resistance should be 1.24-1.55 ohms @ 68 degrees F (10 degres C) on 1989-91 models, or 0.95-1.10 ohms @ 68 degrees F (10 degrees C) on 1991-98 models.
  12.
  13. Measure coil secondary resistance between the ignition coil terminals and the distributor cap high tension lead terminals. Resistance on 1989-91 models should be 9.0-11.0 kilohms for the Chrysler coil and 15.0-19.0 kilohms for the Diamond coil. Resistance on 1991-98 models should be 11.2-15.2 kilohms @ 68 degrees F (10 degrees C).
  14.

If measured resistance is near the extreme high or low end of the scale, the coil is probably faulty and should be replaced.

  1. If resistance is not within specifications, the coil may be faulty.
  2.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Square Coil

See Figures 1 and 2

Square coils are mounted to the front of the right cylinder head.
