Axle Housing Assembly

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle securely on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Position a floor jack under the axle and secure axle to jack.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheels and tires.
  6.  
  7. Secure brake drums to the axle shaft using the lug nuts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the Rear Wheel Anti-lock Lock (RWAL) sensor from the differential housing, if necessary.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the brake hose at the axle junction block. Do not disconnect the brake hydraulic lines at the wheel cylinders.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the parking brake cables and cable brackets.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the vent hose from the axle shaft tube.
  16.  
  17. Mark the propeller shaft and yoke for installation alignment reference.
  18.  
  19. Remove propeller shaft.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the shock absorbers from the axle.
  22.  
  23. Remove the spring clamps and spring brackets.
  24.  
  25. Separate the axle from the vehicle.
  26.  

To install:
  1. Raise the axle with lifting device and align to the leaf spring centering bolts.
  2.  
  3. Install the spring clamps and spring brackets.
  4.  
  5. Install the shock absorbers and tighten the mounting nuts to 60 ft. lbs. (82 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the RWAL sensor to the differential housing, if necessary.
  8.  
  9. Install the brake drums.
  10.  
  11. Connect the brake hose to the axle junction block.
  12.  
  13. Install the axle vent hose.
  14.  
  15. Align propeller shaft and pinion with reference marks.
  16.  
  17. Install universal joint straps and bolts. Tighten to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the wheels and tires.
  20.  
  21. Add gear lubricant, if necessary.
  22.  
  23. Remove the jack and lower the vehicle.
