REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



The multi-function (combination) switch contains electrical circuitry for turn signal, hazard warning, headlamp beam selection, windshield wiper and windshield washer switching.

This procedure requires the use of a tamper proof Torx® bit.

1989-90 Models
STANDARD COLUMNS
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower instrument panel bezel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the wiring retainers by prying out the retainer buttons.
  8.  
  9. Position the gearshift lever to its full clockwise position.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the electrical wiring harness.
  12.  
  13. Remove the screw that attaches the combination switch to the turn signal pivot.
  14.  
  15. Remove the three switch mounting screws.
  16.  
  17. Remove the switch from the steering column.
  18.  

To install:
  1. Position the switch on the column and install the attaching screws.
  2.  
  3. Install the wiper-washer switch.
  4.  
  5. Connect the wiring.
  6.  
  7. Install the wiring cover, lower bezel and steering wheel.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  

TILT COLUMNS
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel.
  4.  
  5. Using a lock plate tool, depress the lock plate just enough to remove the retaining ring, and pry the retaining ring out of the grove.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lock plate and upper bearing spring.
  8.  
  9. Place the turn signal switch in the right turn position.
  10.  
  11. Remove the screw which attaches the link between the turn signal switch and wiper/washer switch pivot.
  12.  
  13. Remove the screw which attaches the hazard switch knob.
  14.  
  15. Remove the 3 screws securing the turn signal switch.
  16.  
  17. Gently pull the switch and wiring from the column.
  18.  

To install:
  1. Position the switch and wiring in the column.
  2.  
  3. Install the 3 screws securing the turn signal switch.
  4.  
  5. Install the screw which attaches the hazard switch knob.
  6.  
  7. Install the screw which attaches the link between the turn signal switch and wiper/washer switch pivot.
  8.  
  9. Place the turn signal switch in the normal position.
  10.  
  11. Install the lock plate and upper bearing spring.
  12.  
  13. Using a lock plate tool, depress the lock plate just enough to install the retaining ring.
  14.  
  15. Install the steering wheel.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.  
  19. Check switch operation.
  20.  

1991-98 Models
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. On vehicles equipped with tilt wheel, remove the tilt lever.
  4.  
  5. Remove the knee blocker.
  6.  
  7. Remove both the upper and lower steering column covers.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower column fixed shroud.
  10.  
  11. Loosen, but do not remove the steering column upper bracket nuts.
  12.  
  13. Move the upper fixed column shroud to gain access to the rear of the combination switch.
  14.  
  15. Remove the multi-function switch tamper proof Torx® screws.
  16.  
  17. Pull the switch away from the column carefully.
  18.  
  19. Loosen the connector screw (the screw will remain in the connector).
  20.  
  21. Remove the wiring connector from the multi-function switch.
  22.  
  23. Remove the switch from the steering column.
  24.  

To install:
  1. Position the switch on the steering column.
  2.  
  3. Install the wiring connector on the multi-function switch and tighten the connector screw to 17 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the multi-function switch tamper proof Torx® screws and tighten to 17 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Reposition the upper fixed column shroud.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the steering column upper bracket nuts to 110 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the lower column fixed shroud.
  12.  
  13. Install both the upper and lower steering column covers.
  14.  
  15. Install the knee blocker.
  16.  
  17. On vehicles equipped with tilt wheel, install the tilt lever.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
  20.  
  21. Check switch operation.
