  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.

CAUTION
Some models covered by this guide are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS, as described in Chassis Electrical .

  1. Remove the tilt column lever, as required.
  2.
  3. Carefully remove both the tamper proof column cover screws and lift the upper and lower steering column covers off the column.
  4.
  5. Remove the tamper proof ignition switch mounting screws.
  6.
  7. Gently pull the switch away from the column.
  8.
  9. Release the connector locks and then unplug the connector from the switch.
  10.
  11. Release the connector lock on the key in switch and halo light connector, then remove the connector from the ignition switch.
  12.
  13. With the key inserted and the ignition switch in the LOCK position, use a small screwdriver to depress the key cylinder retaining pin flush with the key cylinder surface.
  14.
  15. Rotate the key clockwise to the OFF position. The key cylinder should now be unseated from the ignition switch assembly. Do not attempt to remove the key cylinder yet.
  16.

The unseated position is with the key cylinder bezel about1/8inch (3mm) above the ignition switch halo light ring.

  1. With the key cylinder in the unseated position, rotate the key counterclockwise to the LOCK position and remove the key.
  2.
  3. Remove the key cylinder.
  4.

To install:
  1. Install the electrical connectors to the switch. Make sure that the switch locking tabs are fully seated in the wiring connectors.
  2.
  3. Mount the ignition switch to the column. On column shift columns, the shifter must be in the PARK position, and the park lock dowel pin on the ignition switch assembly must engage with the column park lock slider linkage.
  4.
  5. Verify that the ignition switch is in the LOCK position. The flag should be parallel with the ignition switch terminals.
  6.
  7. Apply a dab of grease to the flag and pin.
  8.
  9. Position the park lock link and slider to mid-travel.
  10.
  11. Position the ignition switch against the lock housing face, making sure the pin is inserted into the park lock link contour slot.
  12.
  13. Tighten the tamper proof retaining screws to 12-22 inch lbs. (1.3-2.5 Nm).
  14.
  15. Assemble the column covers and tighten the tamper proof screws to 17 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  16.
  17. Install the tilt column lever, as required.
  18.
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
  20.
  21. With the key cylinder and the ignition in the LOCK position, gently insert the key cylinder into the ignition switch assembly until it bottoms.
  22.
  23. Insert the key, and while gently pushing inward on the key cylinder toward the ignition switch, rotate the key clockwise to the end of its travel.
  24.
  25. Check for proper operation.
