Power Steering Gear

  1. Position the front wheel in the straight ahead position.
  2.  
  3. Place a drain pan under the gear.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect and cap the fluid hoses from the steering gear.
  6.  
  7. Matchmark the coupler for installation reference.
  8.  
  9. Remove the coupler retaining bolts and disconnect the coupler from the steering gear.
  10.  
  11. Matchmark the Pitman shaft and Pitman arm for installation reference.
  12.  
  13. Remove the Pitman arm from the shaft, using a Pitman arm puller.
  14.  
  15. Remove the gear-to-frame mounting bolts and remove the gear.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Position the gear and tighten the gear-to-frame mounting bolts to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Align the coupler and install new retaining bolts. Tighten the retaining bolts to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Align and install the Pitman arm on the shaft. Tighten the retaining nut to 185 ft. lbs. (251 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the fluid hoses to the steering gear.
  8.  
  9. Fill the steering gear with fresh power steering fluid.
  10.
