Fuel Filter

A fuel filter, which is located on the frame rail in front of the fuel tank is used on 1995 vehicles. On 1996-99 vehicles, a combination fuel filter/pressure regulator assembly is used, which is located on the top of the fuel pump module.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION




CAUTION
Do not allow fuel spray or fuel vapors to come in contact with a spark or open flame. Keep a dry chemical fire extinguisher nearby. Never store fuel in an open container due to risk of fire or explosion.

1995 Vehicles

See Figures 1 and 2

  1. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure, as outlined in Fuel System of this guide.
  2.  
  3. If not done already, disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. If necessary, unfasten the retainers then remove the shield covering the fuel filter and pump assembly.
  8.

  1. Unfasten the quick-connect fittings from the fuel pump module and chassis fuel supply tube. Refer to Fuel System for information regarding quick-connect fittings.

The fuel lines are permanently attached to the fuel filter. The ends of the fuel supply and return lines have different size quick-connect fittings. The larger quick-connect fittings attach to the large nipple on the fuel pump module. The smaller fitting connects to the small nipple on the fuel pump module.

  1. Remove the fuel filter mounting screw, then remove the fuel filter from the vehicle.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Position the fuel filter on the frame rail and secure with the retaining screw. Tighten the screw to 85 inch lbs. (3.5 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Apply a thin coating of clean engine oil to the fuel filter nipples, then attach the quick-connect fuel lines. Refer to Fuel System for details.
  4.  
  5. Carefully lower the vehicle, then connect the negative battery cable.

1996-99 Vehicles

See Figures 3 and 4

  1. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure, as outlined in Fuel System of this guide.
  2.  
  3. If not done already, disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the quick-connect fuel supply line from the filter/regulator nipple.
  8.  
  9. Depress the locking spring tab, located on the side of the fuel filter/regulator, then rotate 30° and pull out. Make sure the upper and lower O-rings are still on the filter assembly.

To install:
  1. Lightly coat the filter O-rings with clean engine oil. Insert the filter into the opening in the fuel pump module, then align the 2 hold-down tabs with the flange.

  1. While applying downward pressure, rotate the filter clockwise until the spring tab catches in the locating slot.
  2.  
  3. Attach the fuel line to the filter/regulator assembly.
  4.  
  5. Carefully lower the vehicle, then connect the negative battery cable.
