REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1979-86 Models

See Figures 1 through 5

The radio fuses are mounted on the right rear corner of the radio. The radio need not be removed to change a fuse; just remove the glove box and reach through the opening. To prevent radio static on some models. a ground cable is connected between the engine and the dash panel, and between the frame and the cab.

  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable from the battery.
  2.  
  3. Remove the instrument cluster bezel (trim piece).
  4.  
  5. Remove the radio bracket attaching screws from the instrument panel and remove the radio bracket.
  6.  
  7. Pull the radio outward slightly and disconnect the speaker wires, the power wire and the antenna cable.
  8.  
  9. Remove the radio.
  10.

To install:
  1. When reinstalling, note that the mounting support attaches to the radio differently for AM radios or AM/FM radios.
  2.  
  3. Hold the radio in position and connect the wiring and antenna leads.
  4.  
  5. Before setting the radio into the dash, make certain that the mounting stay fits into the slot in the reinforcement.
  6.  
  7. Install the radio and secure it in place with the mounting screws.
  8.  
  9. Mount the instrument bezel with its retaining screws.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative (-) battery cable to the battery.
  12.  

1987-93 Models See Figure 6

  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable from the battery.
  2.  
  3. Remove the heater control lever knobs.
  4.  
  5. Remove the screws holding the center trim panel. Use a plastic or padded stick or flat tool to remove the panel without marring it.
  6.  
  7. Remove the radio bracket mounting screws.
  8.  
  9. Pull the radio unit out of the dash (with the brackets attached) a short distance.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the wiring and antenna lead at the rear of the radio.
  12.  
  13. Remove the radio from the truck and remove the brackets from the radio.
  14.  

To install:
  1. When reinstalling, mount the brackets to the radio and install them as a unit.
  2.  
  3. Before fitting the radio completely into the dash, connect the wiring and antenna cable.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the bracket mounting screws.
  6.  
  7. Install the face plate and the heater control lever knob.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative (-) battery cable to the battery.
  10.
