REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1979-82 Models
  1. Remove the knobs and nuts remove the radio.
  2.  
  3. Remove the heater fan switch knob and nut.
  4.  
  5. Remove the heater control lever knobs.
  6.  
  7. Remove the ashtray and the combination switch meter attaching screws.
  8.  
  9. Draw out the panel from the lower left corner of the cluster panel.
  10.  
  11. After pulling the wiring harness for the lighter and courtesy lamp, remove the cluster panel.
  12.  
  13. Label and remove all of the control cables attached to the heater side.
  14.  
  15. Remove the heater control assembly.
  16.  
  17. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  18.  
  19. After installing the heater control assembly, make sure each lever operates smoothly.
  20.  

1983-86 Models See Figure 1

  1. Remove the knobs from the heater control sliders and from the radio.
  2.  
  3. Remove the instrument cluster, referring to the detailed procedure later in this section.
  4.  
  5. Label and disconnect each control cable at the heater case. Once the cables are disconnected, do not change the positions of the levers on the case.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 4 screws holding the heater control panel to the dashboard. Remove the panel carefully. Remember that the cables are still attached and must be routed through the dash.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Begin reinstallation by routing the cables through the opening in the dash. Make sure the cables are correctly routed to the levers on the case.
  2.  
  3. Install the retaining screws for the panel.
  4.  
  5. Connect the cables to the proper levers. Double check any retainers or locking clips.
  6.  
  7. Check the operation of each heater control; it should move smoothly and without binding.
  8.  
  9. Install the instrument cluster assembly.
  10.  
  11. Install the knobs for the radio and heater controls.
  12.

1987-93 Models See Figures 2 through 6

  1. Remove the glove box stopper.
  2.  
  3. Remove the glove box.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the air selection control cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the knobs from the heater control panel.
  8.  
  9. Carefully remove the center trim panel. The retaining screws are concealed.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the left defroster duct.
  12.  
  13. Remove the mode selection control cable.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the temperature control cable.
  16.  
  17. Remove the screws holding the heater control panel to the dashboard. Remove the panel carefully. Remember that the cables are still attached and must be routed through the dash.
  18.  

To install:
  1. Begin reinstallation by routing the cables through the opening in the dash. Make sure the cables are correctly routed to the levers on the case.
  2.  
  3. Install the retaining screws for the panel.
  4.  
  5. Connect the temperature control cable and the mode selection cable.
  6.  
  7. Install the left defroster duct.
  8.  
  9. Install the center panel and tighten the fittings.
  10.  
  11. Install the knobs on the heater control panel.
  12.  
  13. Connect the air selection cable.
  14.  
  15. Install the glove box and stoppers.
  16.  
  17. Test the motion of each heater control; the movement should be smooth, with no binding or jerkiness.
