WARNING
Use care when handling the coolant sensor. Damage to the coolant sensor will affect the operation of the fuel control system.

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2.  
  3. Drain the coolant system to below the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the ECT sensor electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Carefully remove the ECT sensor (1).
  8.  

To install:

  1. If you are reinstalling the original sensor, or if you are installing a new sensor without a sealer, coat the threads with sealer GM P/N 21485227, LOCTITE® 242 Threadlocker or an equivalent.
  2.  
  3. Install the ECT sensor (1). Tighten the ECT sensor to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the ECT sensor electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Refill the engine coolant system.
  8.  
  9. Run the engine to normal operating temperature and check for leaks.

WARNING

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.

  3. Drain the coolant system to below the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the ECT sensor electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Carefully remove the ECT sensor.
  8.  

To install:

  1. If you are reinstalling the original sensor, or if you are installing a new sensor without a sealer, coat the threads with sealer GM P/N 12346004 (Canadian P/N 10953480) or Saturn P/N 21485278 or an equivalent.
  2.  
  3. Install the ECT sensor. Tighten the ECT sensor to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the ECT sensor electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Refill the engine coolant system.
  8.  
  9. Run the engine to normal operating temperature and check for leaks.
  10.

WARNING
Use care when handling the coolant sensor. Damage to the coolant sensor will affect the operation of the fuel control system.

  1. Drain the cooling system.
  2.  
  3. If equipped with Regular Production Option (RPO) MN5, disconnect the engine harness electrical connector (3) from the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor.
  4.  
  5. If equipped with RPO M86, disconnect the engine harness electrical connector (3) from the ECT sensor.
  6.  
  7. Carefully remove the ECT sensor.
  8.  

To install:


WARNING
Replacement components must be the correct part number for the application. Components requiring the use of the thread locking compound, lubricants, corrosion inhibitors, or sealants are identified in the service procedure. Some replacement components may come with these coatings already applied. Do not use these coatings on components unless specified. These coatings can affect the final torque, which may affect the operation of the component. Use the correct torque specification when installing components in order to avoid damage.

  1. If you are reinstalling the original sensor, or if you are installing a NEW sensor without a sealer, coat the threads with sealant.
  2.  
  3. Install the ECT sensor. Tighten the sensor to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  4.  
  5. If equipped with RPO M86, connect the engine harness electrical connector (3) to the ECT sensor.
  6.  
  7. If equipped with RPO MN5, connect the engine harness electrical connector (3) to the ECT sensor.
  8.  
  9. Refill the engine coolant system.
  10.  
  11. Run the engine to normal operating temperature and check for leaks.
