Disassembly & Assembly



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove strut from vehicle.

  5. Install the strut (2) in the J 45400  (1).
    NOTE
    The spring is compressed when the strut moves freely.

  6.  
  7. Turn the spring compressor forcing screw until the coil spring is compressed.
  8.  
  9. Loosen the compressor forcing screw until the upper strut mount and coil spring may be removed.

  11. Use a 45 TORX® socket in order to hold the strut shaft. Use a strut rod socket or equivalent to remove the upper strut mount nut.
  12.  
  13. Remove the upper strut mount and the coil spring from the tool.
  14.  
  15. Remove the strut from the tool.
  16.  

To assemble:

  1. Install the coil spring and upper strut mount to the tool.
  2.  
  3. Turn the spring compressor forcing screw until the coil spring is compressed.
  4.  
  5. Install the strut to the coil spring and upper strut mount.
  6.  
  7. Loosely install the strut retaining nut.
  8.  
  9. Use a 45 TORX® socket in order to hold the strut shaft. Use a strut rod socket or equivalent to install the upper strut mount nut. Tighten the strut mount nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Remove the strut from the tool.
  12.  
  13. Install the strut to the vehicle.
  14.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the strut upper mounting nuts.
    NOTE
    Lift the vehicle using ONLY a frame-contact vehicle lift. Do NOT lift the vehicle using a suspension-contact vehicle lift.

  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the tire and wheel.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the Stabilizer bar link from the strut assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the strut lower bolts, nuts and Antilock Brake System (ABS) wiring bracket, if equipped.
  12.  
  13. Remove the strut.
  14.

  1. Install the strut.
  2.  
  3. Install the strut upper mounting nuts. Tighten the nuts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
    NOTE
    This is a prevailing torque type fastener. This fastener may be reused ONLY if: The fastener and its counterpart are clean and free from rust. The fastener develops 27 inch lbs. (3 Nm) of torque/drag against its counterpart prior to the fastener seating. If the fastener does not meet these criteria, REPLACE the fastener.

  4.  
  5. Install the strut lower bolts, nuts and ABS wiring bracket, if equipped. Tighten the strut lower nuts to 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the Stabilizer bar link to the strut assembly. Tighten the Stabilizer bar link nut to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the tire and wheel.
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Align the front wheels.
  14.
