Ignition Lock Cylinder

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Air Bag (Supplemental Restraint System), disarming the system.

  7. Remove the Instrument Panel (I/P) center trim panel (1) by pulling out on the trim panel in order to release the retaining fasteners (2).

  9. Disconnect the electrical connectors on the Instrument Panel (I/P) center trim panel (1).

  11. Remove the steering column opening filler assembly (1) by pulling away the clips (2).
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the electrical connector for the trunk release.

  15. Remove the Instrument Panel (I/P) left side trim panel (1).
  16.  
  17. Tilt the steering wheel up.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the I/P dimmer switch and, if equipped, the fog lamp switch.

  21. Tilt the steering wheel down.
  22.  
  23. Remove the 4 instrument panel cluster bezel screws.
  24.  
  25. Remove the instrument panel cluster bezel.

  27. Remove the steering column trim covers:
    1. Remove the 3 cover screws (4).
    2.  
    3. Remove the steering column upper cover assembly (1).
    4.  
    5. Remove the steering column left cover assembly (2).
    6.  
    7. Remove the steering column right cover assembly (3).

  29. Remove the theft deterrent control module, if equipped.

  31. Turn the ignition lock cylinder to the RUN position.
    NOTE
    There are two retainers on the ignition lock cylinder. Depress both retainers to remove the lock cylinder from the housing.

  33. Depress the first retainer through the lock housing access hole (2) with a small Allen wrench or similar pick-type tool. The lock cylinder will back out slightly.

  35. Depress the second retainer through the lock housing access hole (1). The lock cylinder will back out slightly again.

  37. Pull the lock cylinder out enough to locate the second retainer to the lock housing access hole (2).

  39. Depress the retainer though the access hole (2) a second time. The ignition cylinder should release from the housing. If not, the ignition cylinder may need to be moved in and out several times to locate the retainer correctly in the hole.

  41. Remove the lock cylinder from the lock housing.
  42.  

To install:

  1. Position the lock cylinder in the run position. Insert the cylinder into the lock housing.
  2.  
  3. Rotate the lock cylinder in the housing. Verify proper rotation.
  4.  
  5. Install the theft deterrent control module, if equipped.
  6.  
  7. Installation is the reverse of removal procedure.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the trim cover screws to 17 inch lbs. (2 Nm)
  10.  
  11. Tighten the 4 instrument panel cluster bezel screws to 19 inch lbs. (2 Nm)
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Air Bag (Supplemental Restraint System), arming the system.
  16.  
  17. Program the theft deterrent control module, if equipped.
