Crankshaft Damper (Balancer)

Removal & Installation



3.7L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the radiator fan.
  4.  
  5. Remove accessory drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the crankshaft damper bolt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the damper using the Crankshaft Insert 8513A and Three Jaw Puller 1026.
  10.  

To install:


WARNING
To prevent severe damage to the crankshaft, damper or Special Tool 8512-A, thoroughly clean the damper bore and the crankshaft nose before installing damper.

  1. Align vibration damper slot with key in crankshaft. Slide damper onto crankshaft slightly.
    NOTE
    Special Tool 8512-A is assembled in a specific sequence. Failure to assemble this tool in this sequence can result in tool failure and severe damage to either the tool or the crankshaft.

  3. Assemble Special Tool 8512-A as follows: The nut is threaded onto the shaft first. Then the roller bearing is placed onto the threaded rod (the hardened bearing surface of the bearing MUST face the nut). Next, the hardened washer slides onto the threaded rod. Once assembled, coat the threaded rod's threads with MOPAR ® Nickel Anti-Seize or equivalent.

  5. Using Special Tool 8512-A, press the damper onto crankshaft
  6.  
  7. Install the crankshaft damper bolt and tighten to 130 ft. lbs. (175 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the radiator fan.
  10.  
  11. Install the accessory drive belt.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative cable to battery.
  14.  

4.7L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system
  6.  
  7. Remove the radiator upper hose.
  8.  
  9. Remove the upper fan shroud.
  10.  
  11. Using Special Tools 6958 Spanner, with Adapter Pins 8346, loosen fan and viscous assembly from water pump.
  12.  
  13. Remove fan and viscous assembly.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect electrical connector for fan mounted inside radiator shroud.
    NOTE
    Transmission cooler line snaps into shroud lower right hand corner.

  17. Remove the crankshaft damper bolt.
  18.  
  19. Remove the damper using Special Tools 8513 Insert, and 1026 Three Jaw Puller.

To install:

  6.  
  7. Install the crankshaft damper bolt and tighten to 130 ft. lbs. (175 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the cooling fan assembly.
  10.  
  11. Install the radiator upper fan shroud and tighten fasteners to 95 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Connect the fan shroud electrical connector.
  14.  
  15. Install the radiator upper hose.
  16.  
  17. Install the accessory drive belt.
  18.  
  19. Refill the cooling system.
  20.  
  21. Connect negative cable to battery.
  22.  

5.7L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system
  6.  
  7. Remove the radiator upper hose.
  8.  
  9. Remove the fan shroud.
  10.  
  11. Remove the crankshaft damper bolt.
  12.  
  13. Remove the damper using Crankshaft Insert 8513A and Three Jaw Puller 1023.

To install:


WARNING
To prevent severe damage to the crankshaft, damper or damper Installer 8512-A, thoroughly clean the damper bore and the crankshaft nose before installing damper.

  1. Slide damper onto crankshaft slightly.
    WARNING
    Assemble Special Tool 8512-A as follows: The nut is threaded onto the shaft first. Then the roller bearing is placed onto the threaded rod (the hardened bearing surface of the bearing MUST face the nut). Next, the hardened washer slides onto the threaded rod. Once assembled, coat the threaded rod's threads with MOPAR ® Nickel Anti-Seize or equivalent.

  3. Using Damper Installer 8512-A, press the damper onto the crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. Install the crankshaft damper bolt and tighten to 129 ft. lbs. (176 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the fan shroud.
  8.  
  9. Install the radiator upper hose.
  10.  
  11. Install the accessory drive belt.
  12.  
  13. Refill the cooling system.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.
