Removal & Installation



3.7L Engine
  1. Properly relieve the fuel pressure and disconnect the fuel supply line at the fuel rail.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Remove the strut tower support.

  9. Remove the air intake assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the engine fan.
  12.  
  13. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  14.  
  15. Remove the A/C compressor mounting bolts and secure away from the engine.
    NOTE
    Leave A/C lines attached.

  16.  
  17. Remove the alternator and secure away from the engine.
  18.  
  19. Remove the power steering pump mounting bolts and secure away from the engine.
    NOTE
    Leave power steering hoses attached.

  20.  
  21. Disconnect the following:

    Heater hoses from the engine
     
    Heater hoses from the heater core
     
    Throttle and speed control cables

  23. Remove the upper and lower radiator hoses.
  24.  
  25. Remove the radiator assembly.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect the engine-to-body ground straps on the left side of the cowl.
  28.  
  29. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the following components:

    Intake air temperature (IAT) sensor
     
    Fuel Injectors
     
    Throttle Position (TPS) Switch
     
    Idle Air Control (IAC) Motor
     
    Engine Oil Pressure Switch
     
    Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor
     
    Manifold Absolute Pressure MAP) Sensor
     
    Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor
     
    Coil Over Plugs
     
    Crankshaft Position Sensor

  31. Remove the ignition coil packs.
  32.  
  33. Remove the fuel rail.
  34.  
  35. Remove or disconnect the following:

    PCV hose
     
    Breather hoses
     
    Power brake booster vacuum hose
     
    Knock sensors
     
    Engine oil dipstick tube
     
    Intake manifold

  37. Install Special Tool 8427 Engine Lifting Fixture using the original mounting bolts from the intake manifold and fuel rail.
  38.  
  39. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Oxygen sensor wiring
     
    Crankshaft position sensor
     
    Engine block heater power cable, if equipped
     
    Front driveshaft at the front differential
     
    Starter
     
    Ground straps from the left and right side of the engine block

  41. Remove the structural cover between the engine and transmission.
  42.  
  43. Disconnect the right and left exhaust pipes at the manifolds and from the crossover. Remove the exhaust pipes from the vehicle.
  44.  
  45. Remove the torque converter bolts, keeping them in order for reinstallation.
  46.  
  47. Remove the transmission bellhousing-to-engine bolts.
  48.  
  49. Remove the left and right engine mount through bolts.
  50.  
  51. Lower the vehicle.
  52.  
  53. Support the transmission with a suitable jack.
  54.  
  55. Connect a suitable engine host to the engine lift plate previously installed.
  56.  
  57. Carefully remove the engine from the vehicle.
  58.  
  59. Installation is the reverse order of removal.
  60.  
  61. Tighten the engine-to-transmission bellhousing bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  62.  
  63. Refill the cooling system to the correct level.
  64.  
  65. Refill the engine with oil to the correct level.
  66.  
  67. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  68.  

4.7L Engine
  1. Properly relieve the fuel pressure and disconnect the fuel supply line at the fuel rail.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the battery cables.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Remove the strut tower support.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the two ground straps from the lower left hand side and one ground strap form the lower right hand side of the engine.
  10.  
  11. Remove the through bolt from the left and right side engine mounts.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor.
  14.  
  15. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe from the exhaust manifolds.
  16.  
  17. Remove the structural cover between the engine and transmission.
  18.  
  19. Remove the starter.
  20.  
  21. Remove the torque converter bolts.
  22.  
  23. Remove the transmission-to-engine mounting bolts.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the engine block heater power cable, if equipped.
  26.  
  27. Remove the throttle body resonator assembly and air intake hose.
  28.  
  29. Disconnect the throttle and speed control cables.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect the tube from the right and left side crankcase breathers and remove.
  32.  
  33. Properly discharge the A/C system.
  34.  
  35. Remove the A/C compressor.
  36.  
  37. Remove the engine fan.
  38.  
  39. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  40.  
  41. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines at the radiator.
  42.  
  43. Disconnect the upper and lower radiator hoses.
  44.  
  45. Remove the radiator, A/C condenser, and transmission oil cooler.
  46.  
  47. Remove the alternator.
  48.  
  49. Disconnect the two heater hoses from the timing chain cover and heater core.
  50.  
  51. Unclip and remove the heater hoses from the intake manifold.
  52.  
  53. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the following points:

    Intake air temperature (IAT) sensor
     
    Fuel Injectors
     
    Throttle Position (TPS) Switch
     
    Idle Air Control (IAC) Motor
     
    Engine Oil Pressure Switch
     
    Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor
     
    Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor
     
    Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor
     
    Coil Over Plugs

  55. Disconnect the vacuum lines at the throttle body and intake manifold.
  56.  
  57. Remove the power steering pump and position out of the way.
    NOTE
    Leave the power steering lines attached.

  59. Install the Special Tool 8400 or equivalent Lifting Studs into the cylinder heads.
  60.  
  61. Install the Special Tool 8347 Engine Lifting Fixture as follows:
    1. Holding the lifting fixture at a slight angle, slide the large bore in the front plate over the hex portion of the lifting stud.
    2.  
    3. Position the two remaining fixture arms onto the two Special Tools 8400 Lifting Studs, in the cylinder heads.
    4.  
    5. Pull forward and upward on the lifting fixture, so the lifting stud rests in the slotted area below the large bore.
    6.  
    7. Secure the lifting fixture to the three studs using three 7/16 - 14 N/C locknuts.
    8.  
    9. Make sure the lifting loop in the lifting fixture is in the last hole (closest to the throttle body) to minimize the angle of engine during removal.

  63. Disconnect the body ground strap at the right and left side cowl.
  64.  
  65. Place a suitable jack under the transmission.
  66.  
  67. Connect an engine hoist to the engine lifting fixture and carefully remove the engine from the vehicle.
  68.  
  69. Installation is the reverse order of removal.
  70.  
  71. Tighten the engine mount through bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  72.  
  73. Tighten the transmission-to-engine mounting bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm)
  74.  
  75. Refill the cooling system to the correct level.
  76.  
  77. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  78.  

5.7L Engine
  1. Remove the strut tower support.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine cover.
  4.  
  5. Properly relieve the fuel pressure and disconnect the fuel supply line at the fuel rail.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  8.  
  9. Remove the air cleaner resonator and duct work as an assembly.
  10.  
  11. Drain the cooling system.
  12.  
  13. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  14.  
  15. Remove the radiator fan shroud.
  16.  
  17. Remove the A/C compressor with the lines attached. Secure compressor out of the way.
  18.  
  19. Remove the alternator assembly.
  20.  
  21. Remove the intake manifold and IAFM as an assembly.
  22.  
  23. Remove the ground wires from the rear of each cylinder head.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the heater hoses.
    NOTE
    It is not necessary to disconnect P/S hoses from pump, for P/S pump removal.

  27. Remove the power steering pump and set aside.
  28.  
  29. Disconnect the fuel supply line.
  30.  
  31. Raise and support the vehicle on a hoist and drain the engine oil.
  32.  
  33. Remove engine front mount to frame bolts and nuts.
  34.  
  35. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines from their retainers at the oil pan bolts.
  36.  
  37. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifolds.
  38.  
  39. Disconnect the starter wires. Remove starter motor.
  40.  
  41. Remove the structural dust cover.
  42.  
  43. Remove drive plate to converter bolts.
  44.  
  45. Remove the oil pan to transmission bolts.
  46.  
  47. Remove transmission bell housing to engine block bolts.
  48.  
  49. Lower the vehicle.
  50.  
  51. Install Special Tools 8984 and 8984-UPD Engine Lifting Fixtures.
  52.  
  53. Separate engine from transmission, remove engine from vehicle, and install engine assembly on a repair stand.

To install:

  1. Position the engine in the engine compartment.
  2.  
  3. Lower engine into compartment and align engine with transmission.
  4.  
  5. Mate engine and transmission and install two transmission-to-engine block mounting bolts finger tight.
  6.  
  7. Lower engine assembly until the engine mounts rests in frame perches.
  8.  
  9. Install remaining transmission to engine block mounting bolts and the oil pan to transmission bolts and tighten.
  10.  
  11. Install and tighten engine mount to frame bolts and nuts.
  12.  
  13. Install drive plate to torque converter bolts.
  14.  
  15. Install the structural dust cover.
  16.  
  17. Install the starter and connect the starter wires.
  18.  
  19. Install exhaust pipe to manifold.
  20.  
  21. Lower the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Remove the engine lift fixture, special tool no. 8984 and 8984-UPD.
  24.  
  25. Connect the fuel supply line.
  26.  
  27. Reinstall the power steering pump.
  28.  
  29. Connect the heater hoses.
  30.  
  31. Reconnect the ground wires to the rear of each cylinder head.
  32.  
  33. Install the intake manifold.
  34.  
  35. Install the generator, and wire connections.
  36.  
  37. Install the A/C compressor.
  38.  
  39. Install the accessory drive belt.
  40.  
  41. Install the radiator fan shroud.
  42.  
  43. Connect the radiator lower hose.
  44.  
  45. Connect the transmission oil cooler lines to the radiator.
  46.  
  47. Connect the radiator upper hose.
  48.  
  49. Install the air cleaner resonator and duct work..
  50.  
  51. Add engine oil to crankcase.
  52.  
  53. Fill the cooling system to the correct level.
  54.  
  55. Install the engine cover.
  56.  
  57. Install the strut tower support.
  58.  
  59. Connect the negative battery cable.
  60.  
  61. Start engine and inspect for leaks.
