Removal & Installation



3.7L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the cylinder head cover.
  4.  
  5. For rocker arm removal on cylinder 4, rotate the crankshaft until cylinder No. 1 is at BDC of the intake stroke.
  6.  
  7. For rocker arm removal on cylinder 1, rotate the crankshaft until cylinder No. 1 is at BDC combustion stroke.
  8.  
  9. For rocker arm removal on cylinders 3 and 5, rotate the crankshaft until cylinder No. 1 is at TDC of the exhaust stroke.
  10.  
  11. For rocker arm removal on cylinders 2 and 6, rotate the crankshaft until cylinder No. 1 is at TDC of the ignition stroke.
  12.  
  13. Using the Remover/Installer 8516, press downward on the valve spring and remove rocker arm.

To install:

  1. Using the Remover/Installer 8516, press downward on the valve spring and install the rocker arm.
    WARNING
    Make sure the rocker arms are installed with the concave pocket over the lash adjusters. Failure to do so may cause severe damage to the rocker arms and/or lash adjusters.


    NOTE
    Coat the rocker arms with clean engine oil prior to installation.

  3. For rocker arm installation on cylinder 4, rotate the crankshaft until cylinder No. 1 is at BDC of the intake stroke.
  4.  
  5. For rocker arm installation on cylinder 1, rotate the crankshaft until cylinder No. 1 is at BDC of the combustion stroke.
  6.  
  7. For rocker arm installation on cylinders 3 and 5, rotate the crankshaft until cylinder No. 1 is at TDC of the exhaust stroke.
  8.  
  9. For rocker arm installation on cylinders 2 and 6, rotate the crankshaft until cylinder No. 1 is at TDC of the ignition stroke.
  10.  
  11. Install the cylinder head cover.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  

4.7L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental starter engagement.
  2.  
  3. Remove the cylinder head cover.
  4.  
  5. For rocker arm removal on cylinders 3 and 5, rotate the crankshaft until cylinder No. 1 is at TDC exhaust stroke.
  6.  
  7. For rocker arm removal on cylinders 2 and 8, rotate the crankshaft until cylinder No. 1 is at TDC of the compression stroke.
  8.  
  9. For rocker arm removal on cylinders 4 and 6, rotate the crankshaft until cylinder No. 3 is at TDC of the compression stroke.
  10.  
  11. For rocker arm removal on cylinders 1 and 7, rotate the crankshaft until cylinder No. 2 is at TDC of the compression stroke.
  12.  
  13. Using special tool 8516, Rocker Arm Remover, press downward on the valve spring and remove rocker arm.

To install:


WARNING
Make sure the rocker arms are installed with the concave pocket over the lash adjusters. Failure to do so may cause severe damage to the rocker arms and/or lash adjusters.

  1. For rocker arm installation on cylinders 3 and 5, rotate the crankshaft until cylinder No. 1 is at TDC of the exhaust stroke.
  2.  
  3. For rocker arm installation on cylinders 2 and 8, rotate the crankshaft until cylinder No. 1 is at TDC of the compression stroke.
  4.  
  5. For rocker arm installation on cylinders 4 and 6, rotate the crankshaft until cylinder No. 3 is at TDC of the compression stroke.
  6.  
  7. For rocker arm installation on cylinders 1 and 7, rotate the crankshaft until cylinder No. 2 is at TDC of the compression stroke.
  8.  
  9. Using valve spring compressor, 10102, press downward on the valve spring and install rocker arm.
  10.  
  11. Install the cylinder head cover.
  12.  

5.7L Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental starter engagement.
  2.  
  3. Remove cylinder head cover.

  5. Install push rod retainer 9070.

  7. Loosen the rocker shafts using the sequence shown.
    WARNING
    The rocker shaft assemblies are not interchangeable between intake and exhaust, and failure to install in the correct location could result in engine damage. The intake rocker arms are marked with an -I-.

  9. Remove the rocker shafts. Note location for reassembly.
    WARNING
    The longer push rods are for the exhaust side, and the shorter push rods are for intake side.

  10.  
  11. Remove the push rods. Note push rod location for reassembly.
    WARNING
    Do not remove the retainers from the rocker shaft. The assembly tangs at the bottom of the retainers can be damaged, causing the assembly tangs to break off, and get into the engine.

To install:

  1. Install the push rods in the same order as removed.
  2.  
  3. Install the push rod retainer 9070.
    WARNING
    Ensure that retainers and rocker arms are not overlapped when tightening bolts or engine damage could result.


    WARNING
    Verify that push rod is installed into rocker arm and tappet correctly while installing rocker shaft assembly or engine damage could result. Recheck after rocker shaft has been tightened to specification.


    WARNING
    The rocker shaft assemblies are not interchangeable between intake and exhaust, and failure to install in the correct location could result in engine damage. The intake rocker arms are marked with an -I-.

  5. Install rocker shaft assemblies in the same order as removed.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the rocker shaft bolts to 195 inch lbs. (22 Nm).
    WARNING
    DO NOT rotate or crank the engine during or immediately after rocker arm installation. Allow the hydraulic roller tappets adequate time to bleed down (about 5 minutes).

  9. Remove push rod retainer 9070.
  10.  
  11. Install the cylinder head cover.
