Removal & Installation



3.7L Engine

NOTE
The gasket may be used again, providing no cuts, tears, or deformation has occurred.

  1. Disconnect negative cable from battery.
  2.  
  3. Remove the resonator assembly and air inlet hose.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect injector connectors and un-clip the injector harness.
  6.  
  7. Route injector harness in front of cylinder head cover.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect and remove the left side breather tube.
  10.  
  11. Remove the cylinder head cover mounting bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove cylinder head cover and gasket.
  14.  

To install:


WARNING
Do not use harsh cleaners to clean the cylinder head covers. Severe damage to covers may occur.

  1. Clean cylinder head cover and both sealing surfaces. Inspect and replace gasket as necessary.
  2.  
  3. Tighten cylinder head cover bolts and double ended studs to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install left side breather and connect breather tube.
  6.  
  7. Connect injector electrical connectors and injector harness retaining clips.
  8.  
  9. Install the resonator and air inlet hose.
  10.  
  11. Connect negative cable to battery.
  12.  

4.7L Engine
Left Side
  1. Disconnect negative cable from battery.
  2.  
  3. Remove the resonator assembly and air inlet hose.
  4.  
  5. Remove the spark plug wires.
  6.  
  7. Route injector harness in front of cylinder head cover.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect and remove the left side breather tube.
  10.  
  11. Remove the cylinder head cover mounting bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove cylinder head cover and gasket.
    NOTE
    The gasket may be used again, providing no cuts, tears, or deformation has occurred.

To install:


WARNING
Do not use harsh cleaners to clean the cylinder head covers. Severe damage to covers may occur.

  1. Clean cylinder head cover and both sealing surfaces. Inspect and replace gasket as necessary.
  2.  
  3. Install cylinder head cover and hand start all fasteners. Verify that all studs are in the correct location.
  4.  
  5. Tighten cylinder head cover bolts and double ended studs to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install and connect left side breather tube.
  8.  
  9. Install the spark plug wires.
  10.  
  11. Install the resonator assembly and air inlet hose.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  

Right Side
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the battery tray.
  6.  
  7. Remove air cleaner assembly, resonator assembly and air inlet hose.
  8.  
  9. Drain the cooling system.
  10.  
  11. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  12.  
  13. Remove air conditioning compressor retaining bolts and move compressor to the left.
  14.  
  15. Remove heater hoses.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect injector and ignition coil connectors.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect spark plug wires.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect and remove the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose.
  22.  
  23. Remove oil fill tube.
  24.  
  25. Un-clip injector and ignition coil harness and move away from cylinder head cover.
  26.  
  27. Remove right rear breather tube and filter assembly.
  28.  
  29. Remove cylinder head cover retaining bolts.
  30.  
  31. Remove cylinder head cover.
    NOTE
    The gasket may be used again, providing no cuts, tears, or deformation has occurred.

To install:


WARNING
Do not use harsh cleaners to clean the cylinder head covers. Severe damage to covers may occur.

  1. Clean cylinder head cover and both sealing surfaces. Inspect and replace gasket as necessary.
  2.  
  3. Install cylinder head cover and hand start all fasteners.
  4.  
  5. Tighten cylinder head cover bolts and double ended studs to 105 inch lbs (12 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install right rear breather tube and filter assembly.
  8.  
  9. Install spark plug wires.
  10.  
  11. Install the oil fill tube.
  12.  
  13. Install the PCV hose.
  14.  
  15. Install injector and ignition coil connectors.
  16.  
  17. Install heater hoses.
  18.  
  19. Install air conditioning compressor retaining bolts.
  20.  
  21. Install the accessory drive belt.
  22.  
  23. Fill the cooling system.
  24.  
  25. Install the battery tray.
  26.  
  27. Connect the negative and positive battery cables.
  28.  

5.7L Engine
  1. Disconnect battery negative cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect ignition coil connectors.
  6.  
  7. Remove ignition coil retaining bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove ignition coil.
  10.  
  11. Remove cylinder head cover retaining bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove cylinder head cover.
    NOTE
    The gasket may be used again, provided no cuts, tears, or deformation has occurred.

To install:


WARNING
Do not use harsh cleaners to clean the cylinder head covers. Severe damage to covers may occur.


WARNING
DO NOT allow other components including the wire harness to rest on or against the engine cylinder head cover. Prolonged contact with other objects may wear a hole in the cylinder head cover.

  1. Clean cylinder head cover and both sealing surfaces. Inspect and replace gasket as necessary.
  2.  
  3. Install cylinder head cover and hand start all fasteners. Verify that all double ended studs are in the correct location.
  4.  
  5. Tighten cylinder head cover bolts and double ended studs to 70 inch lbs. (8 Nm). Begin torque sequence in the middle of head cover and tighten bolts moving outward in a crisscross pattern from top to bottom.

  6.  
  7. Before installing coil(s), apply dielectric grease to inside of spark plug boots.
  8.  
  9. Install ignition coils. Tighten fasteners to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Connect ignition coil electrical connectors.
  12.  
  13. Install PCV hose.
  14.  
  15. Connect battery negative cable.
  16.
