Removal & Installation

  1. Place the front wheels in the straight ahead position with the steering wheel centered and locked with a steering wheel lock.

  3. Drain or siphon the power steering system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the column coupler shaft bolt and remove the shaft from the gear.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil drip tray.
  8.  
  9. Remove the pressure line at the gear.
  10.  
  11. Remove the return line at the gear.
  12.  
  13. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the front tires.
  16.  
  17. Loosen the tie rod end jam nuts.
  18.  
  19. Remove the outer tie rod end nut and separate the tie rod from the knuckle using Special Tool 8677.
  20.  
  21. Remove the front splash shield.
  22.  
  23. If equipped with 4WD, remove the front axle.
  24.  
  25. Remove the two steering gear mounting bolts.
  26.  
  27. Move the gear to the full right position to allow clearance over the control arm then lower the gear down, then turn the gear to the full left position then to allow clearance then remove from the vehicle.

  29. Remove the outer tie rod ends from the steering gear (if needed).
  30.  

To install:

  1. Install the outer tie rod ends. (if removed).
  2.  
  3. Position the steering gear back into the vehicle the same way it was removed.
  4.  
  5. Install the steering gear mounting bolts and tighten to 180 ft. lbs. (244 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the front splash shield.
  8.  
  9. Install the outer tie rod ends jam nuts and only hand tighten at this time.
  10.  
  11. Install the outer tie rod ends to the knuckle and tighten the tie rod end nut to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the pressure and return hoses to the steering gear and tighten to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the oil filter drip tray.
  16.  
  17. Install the column coupler shaft into the lower coupling and install a new bolt Tighten to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
  18.  
  19. If equipped with 4WD, install the front axle
  20.  
  21. Install the front tires.
  22.  
  23. Lower the vehicle.
  24.  
  25. Remove the steering wheel lock.
  26.  
  27. Fill the power steering pump.
  28.  
  29. Check and adjust the front wheel alignment as necessary.
