Axle Shaft, Bearing & Seal

Removal & Installation



226RBI Axle
  1. With vehicle in neutral, position on hoist.
  2.  
  3. Remove calipers and rotors.
  4.  
  5. Remove speed sensors from axle tube flange.
  6.  
  7. Remove axle flange nuts from axle.
  8.  
  9. Pull axle shaft and backing plate out of axle tube until axle bearing is exposed.
  10.  
  11. Remove O-ring from the axle bearing.

  13. Remove bearing from axle shaft.
  14.  
  15. Remove axle flange bolts.

To install:


NOTE
If a bearing flange stud is loose or has backed out, tighten stud to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).

  1. Install axle flange bolts into axle flange.
  2.  
  3. Install axle shaft into the axle bearing.
  4.  
  5. Install axle shaft with bearing into axle tube and backing plate with new o-ring on axle.

  7. Slip O-ring through backing plate, then push the bearing through backing plate until bearing is exposed.
  8.  
  9. Install new O-ring axle bearing.

  11. Push axle into axle tube.
  12.  
  13. Install axle flange nuts and tighten to 88 ft. lbs. (119 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install speed sensors in axle tube flange.
  16.  
  17. Install calipers and rotors.
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20.  

C213RE And C213R Axles
  1. With vehicle in neutral, position on hoist.
  2.  
  3. Remove calipers and rotors.
  4.  
  5. Tap axle end plug loose from the wheel flange with a hammer and punch. Pull plug out of wheel flange.
  6.  
  7. Remove speed sensors from axle tube flange.
  8.  
  9. Remove axle flange nuts from axle.
  10.  
  11. Pull axle shaft and backing plate out of axle tube until axle bearing is exposed.
  12.  
  13. Remove O-ring from the axle bearing.

  15. Slide axle shaft from axle tube and backing plate.
  16.  
  17. Tap axle shaft out of the wheel flange and axle bearing through the plug hole with a hammer and brass drift.

To install:

  3. Tap axle shaft through axle bearing into wheel flange.

  5. Install axle shaft into axle tube and backing plate with new O-ring on axle.

  7. Slip O-ring through backing plate, then push axle through backing plate until bearing is exposed..

  9. Install O-ring axle bearing.

  11. Push axle into axle tube.
  12.  
  13. Install axle flange nuts and tighten to 88 ft. lbs. (119 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install speed sensors in axle tube flange.
  16.  
  17. Coat new axle flange plug with Mopar® Stud N' Bearing Mount Adhesive or equivalent and install plug with freeze plug installer.
  18.  
  19. Install calipers and rotors.
  20.  
  21. Lower the vehicle.
