Windshield Washer Systems

Removal & Installation



Reservoir
  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Turn the steering wheel to move the front wheels to the full left position.
  4.  
  5. Open the reservoir filler cap and unsnap it from the hook on the back of the filler neck.
  6.  
  7. Remove the blind rivet that secures the washer reservoir filler neck to the upper radiator support.

  9. Raise and support the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the plastic push-in fasteners that secure the forward end of the left front wheelhouse splash shield to the inner fender panel and the front fascia.
  12.  
  13. Pull the forward end of the front wheelhouse splash shield away from the inner fender panel and front fascia far enough to access the washer reservoir for service.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the headlamp and dash wire harness connectors from the washer fluid level switch, the washer pump/motor and, if equipped, the headlamp washer pump/motor.
    NOTE
    To aid in reinstallation, note the installed position of the washer hoses prior to disconnecting them from the washer pump.

  17. Disconnect the front and rear washer hoses from the barbed outlet nipples of the washer pump and allow the washer fluid to drain into a clean container for reuse.

  19. If the vehicle is so equipped, disconnect the headlamp washer supply hose quick connect fitting from the elbow fitting on the reservoir.
  20.  
  21. Remove the two screws that secure the washer reservoir to the left front frame rail.

  23. Disengage the hook tab at the front of the washer reservoir from the slot in the left front frame rail.
  24.  
  25. Lower the washer reservoir from the vehicle, rotating it as necessary for clearance.
  26.  

To install:

  1. Position the washer reservoir into the left front fender wheel house from underneath the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Raise the washer reservoir into position, rotating it as necessary for clearance.
  4.  
  5. Engage the hook tab at the front of the reservoir into the slot in the left front frame rail.
  6.  
  7. Install and tighten the two screws that secure the washer reservoir to the left front frame rail. Tighten the screws to 60 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
    NOTE
    Be certain to reconnect the front and rear washer hoses to the proper outlet nipples of the washer pump. Failure to properly connect the hoses will cause the front and rear washer systems to operate incorrectly.

  9. Reconnect the front and rear washer hoses to the barbed outlet nipples of the washer pump.
  10.  
  11. If the vehicle is so equipped, reconnect the headlamp washer supply hose quick connect fitting to the elbow fitting on the reservoir.
  12.  
  13. Reconnect the headlamp and dash wire harness connectors to the washer fluid level switch, the washer pump/motor and, if equipped, the headlamp washer pump/motor.
  14.  
  15. Reinstall the plastic push-in fasteners that secure the left front wheelhouse splash shield to the inner fender panel and the front fascia.
  16.  
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Install a new blind rivet to secure the washer reservoir filler neck mounting bracket to the upper radiator crossmember.
  20.  
  21. Reinstall the washer reservoir filler cap hinge onto the hook on the filler neck.
  22.  
  23. Refill the washer reservoir with the washer fluid drained during removal.
  24.  
  25. Reconnect the battery negative cable.
  26.  

Washer Pump

NOTE
The washer pump/motor unit may be removed from the washer reservoir without removing the reservoir from the vehicle.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Turn the steering wheel to move the front wheels to the full left position.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the plastic push-in fasteners that secure the forward end of the left front wheelhouse splash shield to the inner fender panel and the front fascia.
  8.  
  9. Pull the forward end of the left front wheelhouse splash shield away from the inner fender panel and front fascia far enough to access the washer pump/motor unit on the outboard side of the washer reservoir for service.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the headlamp and dash wire harness connector for the washer pump motor from the motor connector receptacle.
    NOTE
    To aid in reinstallation, note the installed position of the washer hoses prior to disconnecting them from the washer pump.

  13. Disconnect the front and rear washer hoses from the barbed outlet nipples of the washer pump and allow the washer fluid to drain into a clean container for reuse.

  15. Grasp the top of the washer pump/motor housing and pull it firmly outward far enough to disengage the snap post on the top of the motor from the receptacle in the reservoir.
  16.  
  17. Grasp the lower part of the washer pump/motor housing and, using a back and forth twisting action, pull the unit outward from the reservoir far enough to disengage the pump inlet nipple from the rubber grommet seal in the reservoir.
  18.  
  19. Remove the rubber grommet seal from the washer pump mounting hole in the reservoir and discard.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate a new rubber grommet seal with clean washer fluid and install it into the washer pump mounting hole located in the outboard side of the washer reservoir. Always use a new rubber grommet seal on the reservoir.
  2.  
  3. Position the barbed inlet nipple of the washer pump/motor unit to the rubber grommet seal in the reservoir.
  4.  
  5. Using hand pressure, press on the lower part of the washer pump firmly and evenly until the barbed inlet nipple is fully seated in the rubber grommet seal in the reservoir.
  6.  
  7. Align the snap post on the top of the motor housing with the snap post receptacle in the washer reservoir.
  8.  
  9. Using hand pressure, press firmly and evenly on the top of motor housing until the post snaps into the receptacle.
    NOTE
    Be certain to reconnect the front and rear washer hoses to the proper outlet nipples of the washer pump. Failure to properly connect the hoses will cause the front and rear washer systems to operate incorrectly.

  11. Reconnect the front and rear washer hoses to the barbed outlet nipples of the washer pump.
  12.  
  13. Reconnect the headlamp and dash wire harness connector for the washer pump/motor unit to the connector receptacle on the top of the motor.
  14.  
  15. Reinstall the plastic push-in fasteners that secure the left front wheelhouse splash shield to the inner fender panel and the front fascia.
  16.  
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
  20.  
  21. Refill the washer reservoir with the washer fluid drained during removal.
