Wheel Speed Sensor Rotors (Toothed Rings)

Removal & Installation



Front
FWD

Fig. To obtain access to the exciter ring on the front drive axle on the Continental,follow the procedure in section 7 for removing the outer CV joint. Then use a suitable pullertool to remove the ring from the joint

RWD
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the caliper, rotor and hub assemblies.
  6.  
  7. Remove the indicator ring from the hub using a suitable 3-jaw puller.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Support the center of the hub so that the wheel studs do not rest on the work surface.
  2.  
  3. Position the new ring on the hub making sure the ring is not cocked. Place a flat plate on top of the ring and press until it is flush with the top of the hub.
  4.  
  5. Install the hub, rotor and caliper assemblies.
  6.  
  7. Install the wheel and tire assembly and lower the vehicle.
  8.

Rear
FWD Vehicles
  1. Turn the air suspension switch to the off position.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the rear of the vehicle securely on jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake caliper assembly from the brake adapter.
  8.  
  9. Support the caliper assembly with a length of wire to prevent damage to the brake hose.
  10.  
  11. If equipped, remove the push on nuts that retain the rotor to the hub and remove the rotor.
  12.  
  13. Remove the grease cap from the bearing and hub assembly.
  14.  
  15. Remove the wheel hub retainer nut, then pull the hub assembly from the spindle. Be sure to use a new retainer nut when installing the hub.
  16.  
  17. Position the hub assembly in an arbor press and press the hub out of the speed sensor ring.

To install:

  1. Position the speed sensor ring over the hub.
  2.  
  3. Using a flat piece of steel or similar tool, press the ring down until it is flush with the e top of the hub.
  4.  
  5. Install the rear hub, rotor and caliper. Tighten the anti-lock sensor Ring to 170-202 ft. lbs. (230-275 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the rear wheels and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  8.  
  9. Lower the rear of the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the lug nuts to 85-105 ft. lbs. (115-142 Nm).
  12.  

RWD
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear axle shaft; refer to Section 7.
  6.  
  7. Using a thin blade cold chisel between the indicator ring and axle flange, strike the chisel evenly around the flange forcing the indicator ring off its journal.
  8.  


WARNING
Be extremely careful not to scratch or nick the wheel bearing and seal journal.

To install:

  1. Remove any burrs or nicks from the sensor ring journal.
  2.  
  3. Position sensor ring installation tool T89P-20202-A, or equivalent on a press with the pilot ring facing down.
  4.  
  5. Place the new sensor ring over the installation tool.
  6.  
  7. Insert the axle shaft through the tool and place pinion bearing cup replacer tool T85T-4616-AH over the end of the axle shaft.
  8.  
  9. Press the axle shaft until the axle shaft bottoms out on the axle flange.
  10.  
  11. Install the axle shaft into the rear axle.
  12.  
  13. Install the wheel and tire assembly and lower the vehicle.
  14.
