Shift Cable



Removal & Installation
  1. From under the instrument panel, remove the shift control cable and retaining bracket from the steering column.
  2.  
  3. Remove the cable plastic terminal from the column selector lever pivot ball by prying with a suitable tool between the cable plastic terminal and the selector lever.
  4.  
  5. Remove the cable-retaining clip and remove the cable from the retaining bracket by carefully squeezing the cable retainer tabs with pliers.
  6.  
  7. From the engine compartment, pry the cable grommet from the dash panel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the nut from the transaxle shift lever.
  10.  
  11. Remove the cable-retaining clip and remove the cable from the retaining bracket by carefully squeezing the cable retainer tabs with pliers
  12.  
  13. Remove the shift cable from the cable retaining bracket on the transaxle and from the engine compartment, pull the cable through the dash panel opening.
  14.  

To install:

  1. From the engine compartment, feed the plastic terminal end through the dash panel opening. Press the rubber grommet into its mounting hole.
  2.  
  3. From the engine compartment , install the cable into the cable retaining bracket on the transaxle and install the cable retaining clip.
  4.  
  5. Place the cable on the transaxle manual shift lever stud. Install the cable retaining nut loosely.
  6.  
  7. From the passenger compartment, install the cable-to-steering column retaining bracket onto the cable and install the cable retaining clip..
  8.  
  9. Install the cable and bracket to the steering column with the two retaining screws.
  10.  
  11. Snap the cable plastic terminal to the selector lever pivot ball on the steering column.
  12.  
  13. Check the operation of the transaxle selector in all positions. Make sure the neutral safety switch is operating properly. The engine should start only in the Park or Neutral position.
