Rear Main Seal

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transaxle
     
    Flywheel
     
    Oil seal retainer
     
    Oil seal
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Apply a 0.060 inch (1.5mm) continuous bead of silicone gasket sealer to the cylinder block.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Oil seal retainer. Tighten the bolts in sequence to 71-106 inch lbs. (8-12 Nm).
     
    Oil seal. Use special tool Seal Installer T82L-6701-A and adapter T91P-6701-A to press the seal into place.
     
    Flywheel. Tighten the bolts to 54-64 ft. lbs. (73-87 Nm).
     
    Transaxle
     

  4.  
  5. Check and adjust all fluid levels as necessary.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.

3.8L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the transaxle. For details, please refer to the procedure located in Section 7 of this manual.
  6.  
  7. Remove the flywheel and the rear cover plate, if necessary.
  8.  
  9. Using a sharp awl, punch one hole into the crankshaft rear oil seal metal surface between the seal lip and the cylinder block.
  10.  
  11. Screw in the threaded end of Jet Plug Remover or an equivalent seal removing tool, then use the tool to remove the seal.
  12.  


NOTE
Use caution to avoid damaging the oil seal surface.

To install:

  1. Inspect the crankshaft seal area for any damage that may cause the seal to leak. If damage is evident, service or replace the crankshaft as necessary.
  2.  
  3. Coat the crankshaft seal area and the lip with engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Using a Rear Crankshaft Seal Replacement tool, or an appropriate seal installer tool, install the seal. Tighten the bolts of the seal installer tool evenly so the seal is straight and seats without misalignment.
  6.  
  7. Install the flywheel. Tighten attaching bolts to 54-64 ft. lbs. (73-87 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install rear cover plate, if necessary.
  10.  
  11. Install the transaxle and connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

4.6L Engine

NOTE
The Front Wheel Drive 4.6L Engine has to be removed with the transaxle intact mounted onto the sub-frame as an assembly. It requires the use of a hoist and a special lifting platform to lower the assembly from the body

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the transmission; refer to Section 7.
  4.  
  5. Remove the flexplate from the crankshaft.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear main seal retainer from the cylinder block.
  8.  
  9. Securely support the seal retainer and remove the seal, using a sharp pick.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Clean and inspect the retainer and retainer-to-cylinder block mating surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Apply a 0.060 in. (1.5mm) continuous bead of a suitable gasket maker to the cylinder block.
  4.  
  5. Install the seal retainer and tighten the bolts, in sequence, to 6.0-8.8 ft. lbs. (8-12 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the new rear main seal using rear main seal installer T82L-6701-A and adapter T91P-6701-A or equivalents.
  8.  
  9. Install the flexplate and tighten the bolts, in a crisscross pattern, to 54-64 ft. lbs. (73-87 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the transmission and lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable, start the engine and check for leaks.
  14.
