Removal & Installation



Left Side
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the water bypass tube.
  4.  
  5. Remove the crankcase ventilation tube from the left side valve cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the two nuts retaining the engine control sensor wiring to the left hand valve cover.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bolts and the ignition coil cover.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the engine control sensor wiring from four ignition coils.
  14.  
  15. Remove the four ignition coils.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the air suspension relay.

  19. Remove the bolt and position the air suspension relay and bracket out of the way.
  20.  
  21. Remove the bolts and studs and remove the valve cover.

To install:


NOTE
Sealing surfaces must be clean and dry before applying sealant.

  1. Clean sealing surfaces of the left side cylinder head and the left side valve cover.
  2.  
  3. Install the new spark plug bore O-ring seals.
  4.  
  5. Install a new valve cover gasket in the left side valve cover.
    NOTE
    The bolts and studs MUST be installed and tightened to specification within four minutes of sealant application.

  6.  
  7. Apply Silicone Gasket and Sealant F7AZ-19554-EA or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSE-M4G323-A4 in two places where the engine front cover meets the left side cylinder head.
    NOTE
    When positioning the valve cover do not damage the gasket.

  9. Position the left side valve cover.
  10.  
  11. Install the bolts and studs in the sequence shown, then tighten to 71-106 inch lbs. (8-12 Nm) in the proper sequence.

  13. Install the air suspension relay bracket.
  14.  
  15. Connect the engine control sensor wiring to the air suspension relay.
  16.  
  17. Install the four ignition coils.
  18.  
  19. Position the engine control sensor wiring and install the two nuts.
  20.  
  21. Connect the engine control sensor wiring to the four ignition coils.
  22.  
  23. Position the ignition coil cover and install the bolts.
  24.  
  25. Install the crankcase ventilation tube.
  26.  
  27. Install the water bypass tube.
  28.  
  29. Connect the negative battery cable.
  30.  

Right Side
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the cross-vehicle support.

  5. Remove the water bypass tube.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the fuel line.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the main vacuum supply tube, and remove the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve and tube.
  10.  
  11. Remove the nut retaining the engine control sensor wiring to the right hand valve cover.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the heater hose from the heater water outlet tube.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) grounds.

  17. Disconnect the engine control sensor wiring from the PCM.
  18.  
  19. Remove the bolts and the ignition coil cover.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the engine control sensor wiring from the four ignition coils.
  22.  
  23. Remove the four ignition coils.
  24.  
  25. Remove the nut retaining the engine control sensor wiring to the front of the right-hand valve cover.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect the fuel injection pressure sensor.
  28.  
  29. Remove the engine control sensor wiring cover.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect the four fuel injectors and position the engine control sensor wiring out of the way.

  33. Remove the eight bolts and two studs from the right side valve cover.
  34.  
  35. Remove the right side valve cover.

  37. Remove and discard the old valve cover gasket.
  38.  
  39. Remove and discard the spark plug bore O-rings.
  40.  

To install:

  1. Install the new spark plug bore O-ring seals.
    NOTE
    The sealing surfaces must be clean and dry before applying the sealant.

  2.  
  3. Clean the sealing surfaces of the right side cylinder head and the right side valve cover.
  4.  
  5. Install a new right side valve cover gasket in the right side valve cover.
    NOTE
    The bolts and studs MUST be installed and tightened to specification within four minutes of sealant application.

  6.  
  7. Apply Silicone Gasket and Sealant F7AZ-19554-EA or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSE-M4G323-A4 in two places where the engine front cover meets the right side valve cover.
    NOTE
    When positioning the valve cover do not damage the gasket.

  9. Position the right side valve cover.
  10.  
  11. Install the eight bolts and the two studs and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm) in the sequence shown.

  13. Install the ignition coils.
  14.  
  15. Reposition the engine control sensor wiring and connect the four fuel injectors.
  16.  
  17. Install the engine control sensor wiring cover.
  18.  
  19. Connect the fuel injection pressure sensor.
  20.  
  21. Position the engine control sensor wiring on the stud and install the nut.
  22.  
  23. Connect the engine control sensor wiring to the four ignition coils.
  24.  
  25. Install the ignition coil cover.
  26.  
  27. Connect the engine control sensor wiring to the PCM.
  28.  
  29. Connect the PCM ground straps.
  30.  
  31. Install the nut.
  32.  
  33. Install the PCV valve and tube, and connect the main vacuum supply tube.
  34.  
  35. Connect the heater water hose.
  36.  
  37. Connect the fuel line.
  38.  
  39. Install the water bypass tube.
  40.  
  41. Install the cross-vehicle support. Tighten the retainers to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  42.  
  43. Connect the negative battery cable.
  44.
