Multi-Function (Combination) Switches

The combination switch incorporates the turn signal, dimmer and windshield wiper switch functions on 1990-99 vehicles. The combination switch incorporates only the turn signal and dimmer function on 1988-89 vehicles. For windshield wiper switch removal and installation on 1988 -89 vehicles, refer to the procedure in this Section.

Removal & Installation



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the ignition switch lock cylinder, as follows:
    1. Insert the ignition key into the ignition switch lock cylinder and turn to the RUN position.
    2.  
    3. Insert a punch in the access hole of the steering column and press the release tab while pulling out the ignition switch lock cylinder.

  5. Unscrew the tilt wheel handle and shank and remove.
  6.  
  7. Remove the screws and the LH instrument panel insulator.
  8.  
  9. Remove the upper and lower steering column shrouds.
  10.  
  11. Remove the screws.
  12.  
  13. Remove the lower steering column shroud.
  14.  
  15. Remove the upper steering column shroud.
  16.  
  17. Remove the multi-function switch, as follows:
    1. Remove the two screws.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
    4.  
    5. Remove the multi-function switch.

To install:


NOTE
When the battery is disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 10 miles (16 km) or more to relearn the strategy.

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Observe the following tightening specifications:
    1. Multi-function switch screws: 18-26 inch lbs. (2-3 Nm).

    3. Lower steering column shroud screws: 7-9 inch lbs. (0.7-1.1 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Tilt wheel handle: 27-44 inch lbs. (3-5 Nm).

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. If equipped with tilt column, move to the lowest position and remove the tilt lever.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ignition lock cylinder; refer to the procedure in this Section.
  6.  
  7. Remove the shroud screws and remove the upper and lower shrouds.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 2 self-tapping screws attaching the combination switch to the steering column casting and remove the switch.
  10.  
  11. Remove the wiring harness retainer and disconnect the 2 electrical connectors.
