The instrument panel houses the controls for most of the electrical systems of the vehicle. The glove compartment is located in the lower RH side of the instrument panel. The LH side of the instrument panel frames the steering column and houses the instrument cluster.

Removal & Installation



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the defroster grille by pulling upward to unsnap the six clips and disconnect the wiring.
  4.  
  5. Open the glove compartment door and unsnap the glove box damper wire.
  6.  
  7. Press the sides inward and lower the glove compartment assembly toward the floor.
  8.  
  9. Through the glove box opening, remove the automatic temperature sensor hose from the blower assembly, and disconnect the electronic automatic temperature control vacuum lines.
  10.  
  11. Remove the five pushpins from the RH and LH lower instrument panel insulators. Remove the instrument panel insulators.
  12.  
  13. For traction assist equipped vehicles, disconnect the traction assist switch connector.
  14.  
  15. Remove the three screws retaining lower instrument panel steering column cover and remove the cover.
  16.  
  17. Remove the five screws retaining the lower instrument panel steering column reinforcement. Remove the reinforcement.
  18.  
  19. Remove the steering column.
  20.  


CAUTION
Do not remove the steering column, steering wheel, and air bag module as an assembly from the vehicle. Unless the steering column is locked to prevent rotation, or the lower end of steering shaft is wired in such a way to prevent the steering wheel from being rotated; as this will damage the air bag sliding contact.

  1. Make sure that the vehicle front wheels are in the straight ahead position.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the instrument panel lower trim cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the air bag sliding contact.
  8.  
  9. Remove the tilt wheel handle and shank by unscrewing it from the column and removing the four screws.
  10.  
  11. Rotate the ignition switch lock cylinder to the RUN position. Using a 1 / 8 inch drift, press the lock cylinder retaining pin through the access hole and remove the ignition switch lock cylinder.
  12.  
  13. Remove the four upper and lower steering column shroud retaining screws. Remove the upper and lower steering column shrouds.
  14.  
  15. Remove the two screws retaining brake release lever.
  16.  
  17. Remove the two screws retaining the hood release lever.
  18.  
  19. Remove the screw ant the steering column opening which retains the instrument panel to the instrument panel dash brace.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the LH main wiring and RH main wiring bulkhead connectors from the main wiring harness.
  22.  
  23. Remove the three screws retaining the instrument panel to the cowl top.
  24.  
  25. Remove the two screws retaining the steering column mounting support to the instrument panel cowl brace.
  26.  
  27. On the LH cowl side, remove the two bolts retaining the instrument panel and loosen the captive bolt.
  28.  
  29. On the RH side, remove the nut and washer retaining instrument panel.
  30.  
  31. With the help of an assistant, remove the instrument panel from the vehicle.
  32.  

To install:

  1. With an assistant , place the instrument panel into the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Install the three screws retaining instrument panel to the cowl top. Tighten to 18-26 in. lbs. (2-3 Nm)
  4.  


NOTE
Do not overtighten nut. Damage to the instrument panel may result.

  1. On the RH cowl side, install the nut and washer retaining instrument panel to the body. Tighten to 89-123 ft. lbs. (10-14 Nm)
  2.  
  3. On the LH cowl side, install the two blots retaining the instrument panel to the body. Tighten the two retaining bolts and one captive bolt (to the right) to 13-16 ft. lb. (17-23 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the two screws retaining the steering column mounting support to the instrument panel cowl brace. Tighten the screws to 13-16 ft. lb. (17-23 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the LH main wiring and RH main wiring bulkhead connectors to main wiring harness. Tighten the connector screws to 36-53 in. lbs. (4-6 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the screw at the steering column opening which retains the instrument panel to he instrument panel dash brace. Tighten the screws to 54-70 in. lbs. (6-8 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the hood and brake release levers.
  12.  
  13. Install the steering column.
  14.  
  15. Install the five screws retaining the instrument panel steering column opening cover reinforcement.
  16.  
  17. Install the three screws and instrument panel steering column cover.
  18.  
  19. On vehicles with traction control, connect the electrical connector for the traction control switch.
  20.  
  21. Install the RH and LH lower instrument panel insulator using pushpins.
  22.  
  23. Working through the glove compartment opening, connect the automatic temperature sensor hose (to the blower) and any other electrical connectors or vacuum lines connected to the A/C evaporator housing.
  24.  
  25. Re-install the glove compartment door damper. Press the sides of the glove compartment inward and close the glove compartment.
  26.  
  27. Install the defroster grille by connecting the two light sensors and snapping them into place.
  28.  
  29. Install or connect any other components removed or disconnected to remove the instrument panel.
  30.  
  31. Check all the instrument panel gauges and controls for proper operation. Check the air bag indicator operation.
