Bushing Replacement



The control arm bushings are serviced with the control arm as an assembly.

Removal & Installation




CAUTION
Do not attempt to service the rear suspension without first deflating the air springs.


NOTE
Servicing the air suspension requires a scan tool with bi-directional capabilities to deflate the air springs.

  1. Properly deflate the air springs.
  2.  
  3. Turn the air suspension switch to the OFF position. The switch located on the right kick panel.
  4.  
  5. Support the lower control arm on a jackstand.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Brake hose bracket
     
    Upper ball joint
     
    Upper control arm
     

  8.  

To install:


NOTE
Use new mounting nuts and bolts.

  1. Install the upper control arm. Tighten the ball joint nut to 50-67 ft. lbs. (68-92 Nm), then tighten the control arm mounting bolts to 73-97 ft. lbs. (98-132 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Brake hose bracket
     
    Rear wheel
     

  4.  
  5. Turn the air suspension switch to the ON position and check for proper operation.
  6.  
  7. Check the wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.
  8.  


CAUTION
Do not attempt to service the rear suspension without first deflating the air springs.


NOTE
Disable the air suspension before raising the vehicle. The switch is located on the left side of the luggage compartment.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Turn the air suspension switch to the OFF position.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Shock absorber actuator wiring, if equipped with semi-active suspension
     
    Air spring
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Lower control arm
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm. Tighten the bolts to 50-68 ft. lbs. (68-92 Nm).
     
    Stabilizer bar link. Tighten the nut to 25-34 ft. lbs. (34-46 Nm).
     
    Air spring
     
    Shock absorber actuator wiring, if equipped with semi-active suspension
     
    Rear wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Turn the air suspension switch to the ON position.
  4.  


NOTE
If one upper control arm requires replacement, also replace the upper control arm on the other side of the vehicle. If both upper arms are to be replaced, remove and install one at a time to prevent the axle from rolling or slipping sideways. If both upper control arms and both lower control arms are to be removed at the same time, remove both coil or air springs, as detailed in this Section.

  1. If equipped, turn the air suspension switch OFF .
  2.  
  3. Raise the vehicle and support the frame side rails with jack stands.
  4.  
  5. Support the rear axle under the differential pinion nose as wheel as under the axle.
  6.  
  7. Unsnap the parking brake cable from the upper arm retainer. If equipped, disconnect the height sensor from the ball stud on the left upper control arm.
  8.  
  9. Remove and discard the nut and bolt retaining the upper arm to the axle housing. Disconnect the arm from the housing.
  10.  
  11. Remove and discard the nut and bolt retaining the upper arm to the frame bracket and remove the arm.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Hold the upper arm in place on the front arm bracket and install a new retaining bolt and self-locking nut. Do not tighten at this time.
  2.  
  3. Secure the upper arm to the axle housing with new retaining bolts and nuts. The bolts must be pointed toward the front of the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Raise the suspension with a jack until the upper arm rear pivot hole is in position with the hole in the axle bushing. Install a new pivot bolt and nut with the nut facing inboard.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the upper arm-to-axle pivot bolts to 103-132 ft. lbs. (140-180 Nm) and upper arm-to-frame pivot bolts to 119-149 ft. lbs. (162-203 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Snap the parking brake cable into the upper arm retainer. Connect the height sensor to the ball stud on the left upper arm, if equipped.
  10.  
  11. Remove the supports from the frame and axle and lower the vehicle. If equipped, turn the air suspension switch ON .
