Transaxle Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transaxle fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding
     
    Negative battery cable from the transaxle
     
    Transaxle level gauge
     
    Reservoir tank and air cleaner assembly
     
    Throttle cable from the bracket
     
    Engine left mounting upper side bolts
     
    Engine left mounting stay
     
    Ground cable from the transaxle
     
    Wiring harness clamp and throttle cable clamp
     
    Undercovers
     
    Left and right halfshafts
     
    Front exhaust pipe
     
    Engine support fixture
     
    Mounting insulator
     
    Starter
     
    Vehicle speed sensor connector
     
    Solenoid connector and park/neutral position switch connector. Remove the wiring harness clamps
     
    Nut from the manual shift lever, then the control cable from the bracket by removing the clip
     
    Oil cooler hoses
     
    Transaxle filler tube
     
    Converter cover
     
    Torque converter bolts
     
    Transaxle mounting bolts
     
    Transaxle

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transaxle. Tighten the bolts as follows: Bolt A: 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm); Bolt B: 34 ft. lbs. (46 Nm); Bolt C: 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm)
     
    Torque converter bolts to the transaxle. Bolts: 20 ft. lbs. (28 Nm)
     
    Torque converter cover.
     
    Transaxle filler pipe
     
    Oil cooler hoses and replace the clips to their original positions
     
    Control cable for the transaxle to the bracket and install the clip
     
    Control cable to the manual shaft lever by installing the nut
     
    Solenoid connector and park/neutral position switch connector. Connect the wiring to the clamps
     
    Vehicle speed sensor wiring
     
    Starter. Bolt: 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm)
     
    Mounting insulator. Bolt A: 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm); Bolt and nut B: 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm)

    Front exhaust pipe
     
    Left and right halfshafts nut: 159 ft. lbs. (49 Nm)
     
    Undercovers
     
    Transaxle mounting bolts to the transaxle side
     
    Wiring harness clamp and throttle cable clamp
     
    Ground cable. Bolt: 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Engine left mounting upper side bolts and stay. Bolts: 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm)
     
    Throttle cable
     
    Air cleaner and the reservoir tank
     
    Transaxle level gauge
     
    Negative battery cable

  3. Fill the transaxle fluid to the proper level.
  4.  
  5. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
