Lower Ball Joints

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding
     
    Front wheels
     
    Cotter pin from the bearing locknut cap, then remove the cap
     

  4.  
  5. Depress the brake pedal and loosen the axle nut
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Brake caliper attaching hardware, position the caliper aside with the hydraulic line still attached and suspend it with a wire
     
    ABS speed sensor, if equipped
     
    Rotor
     

  8.  
  9. Loosen the 2 nuts holding the strut to the steering knuckle assembly. Do not remove at this time.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Cover the halfshaft boot with a shop rag to protect it from any damage.



    Cotter pin and nut from the tie rod end. Using a tie rod end removal tool, separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle
     
    Steering knuckle from the strut assembly
     
    Axle nut and grasp the hub and knuckle assembly. With a plastic hammer tap the axle shaft to remove knuckle and hub

  13. Clamp the steering knuckle in a vise and remove the dust deflector. Remove the nut holding the steering knuckle to the ball joint. Press the ball joint out of the steering knuckle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the ball joint from the arm.

To install:

  1. Install the Lower ball joint to the lower arm. Tighten the fasteners to: 66 ft. lbs. (89 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Tighten the ball joint-to-steering knuckle nut to: 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    New cotter pin. Drive the deflector shield onto the knuckle
     
    Knuckle and hub assembly to the axle and temporarily tighten the axle nut
     
    Knuckle assembly to the lower strut bracket. Temporarily insert the mounting bolts from the rear and install the nuts
     
    Tie rod end to the knuckle
     

  6.  
  7. Tighten the bolts on the lower side of the strut assembly.
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    ABS speed sensor
     
    Brake disc and the caliper
     

  10.  
  11. Tighten the axle nut.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Check and adjust the alignment, if needed.
  16.
