NOTE
The hub bearing could be damaged if subjected to the full weight of the vehicle, such as if the vehicle is moved without the halfshafts. If it is absolutely necessary to place the full vehicle weight on the hub bearing, first support the bearing with SST No. 09608-16041.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transaxle fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding
     
    Cotter pin, locknut cap, and bearing locknut
     
    Front wheels
     
    Undercovers
     
    With ABS, speed sensor
     
    Tie rod ball joint from the steering knuckle
     
    Lower ball joint from the lower suspension arm
     

  6.  
  7. Drive the halfshaft from the knuckle.
    NOTE
    Most halfshafts can be separated from the knuckle using a brass or plastic hammer; some others may require the use of a puller.

  9. Remove the halfshaft from the transaxle
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Snapring, opening side facing downward, to the inboard, oiled, joint tulip
     
    Halfshaft into the transaxle. After installing the halfshaft to the transaxle, check that there is 0.08-0.12 in. (2-3mm) of axial play. Check that the halfshaft is making contact with the pinion shaft and that the halfshaft cannot be pulled out
     
    Halfshaft into the knuckle
     
    Lower suspension arm to the steering knuckle. Nuts and bolts: 105 ft. lbs. (142 Nm).
     
    Tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Nut: 36 ft. lbs. (216 Nm).
     
    ABS speed sensor
     
    Hub locknut and washer Nut: 159 ft. lbs. (49 Nm)
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Wheels
     
    Locknut cap and NEW cotter pin.
     
    Undercovers
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the transaxle fluid to the proper level.
  4.  
  5. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  6.
