Transaxle Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transaxle fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
     
    Air cleaner case assembly with hose
     
    Coolant reservoir tank
     
    Release cylinder tube bracket
     
    Clutch release cylinder
     
    Back-up light switch connector
     
    Ground cable
     
    Shift cables from the transaxle
     
    Vehicle speed sensor connector or the speedometer cable
     
    Engine wire clamps
     
    Starter set bolt from the transaxle upper side
     
    2 transaxle upper mounting bolts
     
    Engine left mounting stay
     
    Engine left mounting set bolt from the rear side
     
    Under covers
     
    Lower ball joint from the lower arm.
     
    Halfshafts
     
    Front exhaust pipe
     
    Hole cover
     
    Engine front mounting set bolts
     
    Engine rear mounting
     
    Engine center support member
     
    Starter
     
    Transaxle mounting bolts from the engine rear end plate side
     
    Engine left mounting set bolts from the front side
     
    Transaxle mounting bolts from the engine front side, then engine rear side
     
    Transaxle

To install:

  1. Align the input shaft with the clutch disc and install the transaxle to the engine. 12mm bolts: 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm). 10mm bolts: 34 ft. lbs. (46 Nm).

  3. Install or connect the following:

    Left engine mount. Bolts: 41 ft. lbs. (56 Nm).
     
    Transaxle mounting bolts to the engine rear end plate side. Bolts: 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
     
    Starter, lower bolt and electrical connector to the starter. Bolt: 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
     
    Engine center support member. Radiator support bolts: 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm). Frame bolts: 152 ft. lbs. (206 Nm).
     
    Engine rear mounting. Bolts: 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
     
    Engine front mounting. Bolts: 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
     
    Hole covers
     
    Front exhaust pipe
     
    Halfshafts Nut: 159 ft. lbs. (49 Nm)
     
    Lower ball joint to lower arm. Bolt and nuts: 105 ft. lbs. (142 Nm).
     
    Undercovers
     
    Engine left mounting set bolt to the rear side. Bolt: 41 ft. lbs. (56 Nm).
     
    Engine left mounting stay. Bolt: 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
     
    2 transaxle upper side mounting bolts. Bolts: 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
     
    Starter set bolt to the transaxle upper side. Bolt: 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
     
    Engine wire clamps
     
    Vehicle speed sensor connector or the speedometer cable.
     
    Transaxle shift cables and ground cable.
     
    Back-up light switch connector.
     
    Release cylinder and release cylinder tube bracket. Bolts: 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
     
    Coolant reservoir tank
     
    Air cleaner case assembly
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Fill the transaxle fluid to the proper level.
  6.  
  7. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
