Transmission Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Shift the transmission into N .
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear wheels.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Intermediate exhaust pipe
     
    Right side muffler and tie the left side muffler to the underbody
     
    Driveline tunnel closeout panel
     
    Rear bell housing access plug and matchmark the flexplate to the torque converter
     
    Flexplate to torque converter bolts

    Fig. Remove the plugs and install two M10 x 1.5 x 55mm or longer bolts into the bolt holes to secure the bearing

     



    2 plug bolts from the front of the driveshaft support assembly. Install two M10 x 1.5 x 55mm or longer bolts into the bolt holes. Torque the bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm). These bolts must remain installed until instructed to remove them in order to maintain the position of the input shaft bearing.
     
    Engine flywheel housing access plug and loosen the propeller shaft hub clamp bolt. It may be necessary to rotate the engine at the flywheel to gain access

    Nut retaining the shift cable bracket to the transmission
     
    Shift control cable from the shift lever and reposition the cable and bracket out of the way
     
    Rear transverse spring and support the lower control arms
     
    Outer tie rod end from the knuckle
     
    Shock absorber lower mounting bolts
     
    Lower ball joints from the knuckles
     

  10.  
  11. Install a transmission support fixture to the transmission.
  12.  
  13. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wiring harness and brake pipe clip retainers from the rear crossmember
     
    Transmission to differential lower nut
     
    Transaxle mount to rear crossmember nut
     
    Rear crossmember retaining nuts and make certain that a jackstand is securely in place
     
    Crossmember
     
    Transaxle mount bracket
     

  14.  
  15. Separate the axle shafts from the differential and tie them to the underbody.
  16.  
  17. Release the retainer securing the wiring harness from the -L- shaped brackets along the driveline support. Move the harness out of the way.
  18.  
  19. Lower the driveline slightly and tilt it to gain access to the electrical connectors.
  20.  
  21. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) electrical connector
     
    Electronic Brake Traction Control Module (EBTCM) electrical connectors
     
    Wire harness retainer from the differential rear cover stud
     
    Wire harness retainer clip from the top of the differential
     
    Transmission harness 20 way connector
     
    Park Neutral Position (PNP) switch electrical connectors
     
    Bolt securing the wire harness to the left side of the case

  23. Lower the driveline and angle it while observing the top rear of the differential and the lowest part of the rear compartment floor panel. The engine Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) pipes will most likely contact the dash panel. Make certain not to damage the dash.

  25. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wire harness from the retainer along the top of transmission
     
    Transmission rear oil cooler pipes from the junction fittings at the flywheel housing
     
    5 driveline-to-flywheel housing bolts after securing the rear of the oil pan

  27. Bend the wiring harness bracket away from the driveline, toward the tunnel wall to have access to remove the driveline.
  28.  
  29. Separate the driveline from the engine by prying them apart with a flat blade tool.
  30.  
  31. Lower the driveline and tilt it away from the engine until the input shaft clears the flywheel housing.
  32.  
  33. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Driveline
     
    Transmission oil cooler rear pipes from the fittings
     
    Transmission to driveline bolts
     
    Separate the transmission from the driveline with a flat blade tool
     
    Driveline from the transmission while supporting the torque converter
     
    Differential to transmission bolts. Use caution so the output shaft seal is not damaged
     
    Differential plate from the differential

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Differential plate to the transmission. Use caution not to damage the output seal. Torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
     
    Transmission to driveline support. Torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).

  3. Using a chain hoist, place the assembly on a transmission jack.
  4.  
  5. Carefully raise the assembly into the vehicle while placing the wiring harness loosely into the harness retaining slots.
  6.  
  7. Align the assembly for installation into the engine. The driveshaft will slide into the rear of the engine as long as the angles are the same.
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    Driveshaft assembly in the engine. Reposition the wiring harness bracket to align with the appropriate hole in the driveshaft assembly. Torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
     
    Wiring harness on the top of the driveshaft assembly
     
    Oil cooler lines. Torque the fittings to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
     
    Wiring harness to the left side of the transmission. Reattach the connectors
     

  10.  
  11. Raise the transmission to installed height and remove the jack from the engine.
  12.  
  13. Install or connect the following:

    Suspension crossmember. Torque the nuts to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
     
    Transmission mount to the crossmember. Torque the nuts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
     
    Transmission to differential lower nut. Torque the nut to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
     
    Lower ball joints to the suspension knuckles
     
    Shock absorber lower mounting bolts. Torque the bolts to 162 ft. lbs. (220 Nm).
     
    Outer tie rod ends to the suspension knuckle
     
    Rear transverse spring
     
    EBTCM and bracket. Torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
     
    Electrical connector for the VSS and the EBTCM
     
    EBTCM ground lead. Torque the nut 25 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
     
    Electrical connector for the PNP switch
     
    Transmission cable and bracket. Torque the nuts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
     
    Transmission flexplate to the torque converter using the matchmarks made during removal. Torque the bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (63 Nm).
     
    Rear bell housing access plug
     
    Propeller shaft hub bolt until it is finger tight
     

  14.  
  15. Remove the two M10 x 55mm bolts from the input shaft front bearing.
  16.  
  17. Install or connect the following:

    2 plug bolts to the driveline support assembly. Torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
     
    Driveline tunnel closeout panel
     
    Both mufflers and the intermediate pipe
     
    Both rear wheels
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  18.  
  19. Start the vehicle and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Turn the engine OFF . Allow the engine to cool to ambient temperature, then tighten the flywheel hub collar bolt to 96 ft. lbs. (130 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the bell housing inspection plug.
  22.  
  23. Flush the automatic transmission fluid cooler.
  24.  
  25. A front end alignment is recommended when the crossmember is removed.
  26.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    WARNING
    Failure to follow the proper removal and installation procedures may result in damage to the engine crankshaft thrust bearing.

  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Shift the transmission into N .
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear wheels.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Intermediate exhaust pipe
     
    Right side muffler and tie the left side muffler to the underbody
     
    Driveline tunnel closeout panel
     
    Rear bell housing access plug
     
    matchmark the flexplate to the torque converter
     
    Flexplate to torque converter bolts

    2 plug bolts from the front of the driveshaft support assembly. Install two M10 x 1.5 x 55mm or longer bolts into the bolt holes. Torque the bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm). These bolts must remain installed until instructed to remove them in order to maintain the position of the input shaft bearing.

    Shift control cable from the shift lever and reposition the cable and bracket out of the way

    Shock absorber lower mounting bolts
     
    Lower ball joints from the knuckles
     

  10.  
  11. Install a transmission support fixture to the transmission.
    WARNING
    When tilting down the rear of the driveline, observe the clearance between the rear of the engine and the composite dash panel. Do not allow the engine to rest unsupported against the composite dash panel, or vehicle damage may result.

  12.  
  13. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wiring harness and brake pipe clip retainers from the rear crossmember
     
    Transmission to differential lower nut
     
    Transaxle mount to rear crossmember nut
     
    Rear crossmember retaining nuts and make certain that a jackstand is securely in place
     
    Crossmember
     
    Transaxle mount bracket
     

  14.  
  15. Separate the axle shafts from the differential and tie them to the underbody.
  16.  
  17. Release the retainer securing the wiring harness from the -L- shaped brackets along the driveline support. Move the harness out of the way.
  18.  
  19. Lower the driveline slightly and tilt it to gain access to the electrical connectors.
    WARNING
    When lowering and removing the rear of the driveline, observe the clearance between the rear of the transaxle assembly and the underbody to prevent damage.

  21. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) electrical connector
     
    Electronic Brake Traction Control Module (EBTCM) electrical connectors
     
    Wire harness retainer from the differential rear cover stud
     
    Wire harness retainer clip from the top of the differential
     
    Transmission harness 20 way connector
     
    Park Neutral Position (PNP) switch electrical connectors
     
    Bolt securing the wire harness to the left side of the case

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Differential plate to the transmission. Use caution not to damage the output seal. Torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).

  13. Install or connect the following:
