Driven Disc & Pressure Plate

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Exhaust system
     
    Driveline support and transmission as an assembly
     
    Flywheel inspection cover
     
    Pressure plate bolts. It will be necessary to rotate the flywheel to access all the bolts
     
    Pressure plate and disc

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Clutch disc and pressure plate on the flywheel
     
    Clutch disc alignment tool through the disc to keep it in place
     
    Pressure plate bolts finger-tight. Turn the flywheel to access all the bolt holes

  3. Torque the flywheel bolts in the sequence shown, using 3 steps to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the inspection cover and tighten the bolts as follows:
    1. 2002-2004 Models: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
    2.  
    3. 2005 Models: 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
    4.  

  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Driveline support and transmission assembly
     
    Exhaust system
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  
  9. Bleed the clutch system.
  10.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the driveline support assembly with the transaxle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bell housing bolts. The upper bolts can be accessed by lowering the engine cradle approximately 25 mm (1 in) and tipping the engine back.
  8.  
  9. Mark the clutch pressure plate and flywheel with adjacent alignment marks before removing the pressure plate.
  10.  
  11. Loosen the visible clutch pressure plate bolts.
  12.  
  13. Rotate the engine flywheel.
  14.  
  15. Repeat previous steps all the bolts have been loosened.
  16.  
  17. Remove the visible clutch pressure plate bolts.
  18.  
  19. Rotate the engine flywheel.
  20.  
  21. Repeat previous steps until all the bolts have been removed.
  22.  
  23. Remove the clutch pressure plate bolts from the flywheel.
  24.  
  25. Remove the clutch pressure plate and the clutch driven plate.
  26.  

To install:

  1. Inspect the clutch pressure plate and the clutch driven plate for wear or damage. Repair or replace as necessary.
  2.  
  3. Inspect the engine flywheel. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement if removing.
  4.  
  5. Adjust the clutch pressure plate, if necessary.
  6.  
  7. If reusing the clutch pressure plate, align the previously created mark on the flywheel with the alignment mark on the pressure plate.
  8.  
  9. Install the clutch driven plate and clutch pressure plate to the engine flywheel.
  10.  
  11. Install the visible clutch pressure plate bolts finger tight.
  12.  
  13. Rotate the engine flywheel.
  14.  
  15. Repeat previous steps until all the bolts are installed finger-tight.
  16.  
  17. Using the J-38836 , align the clutch driven plate to the pilot bearing.
    1. Install J-42386-A and bolts. Use one M10 1.5 X 120 mm and one M10 1.5 X 45 mm bolt for proper tool operation. Tighten the J-42386-A bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).

  19. Tighten the clutch pressure plate bolts in sequence and evenly over 3 increments with the fourth increment to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).

  21. Install the bell housing bolts and tighten to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Install the driveline support assembly with the transaxle.
  24.  
  25. Connect the negative battery cable.
