Master Cylinder

Removal & Installation



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the left instrument panel lower insulator panel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the clutch master cylinder rod retainer.
  6.  
  7. Remove the clutch master cylinder rod from the clutch pedal.
  8.  
  9. Remove the windshield washer solvent container.
  10.  
  11. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the clutch actuator cylinder hose from the hose retaining clip, at the rear of the engine.
  14.  
  15. Using a Clutch Line Separator J-36221, depress the white circular release ring on the actuator hose and simultaneously pull lightly on the master cylinder hose to disconnect.
  16.  
  17. Protect both hose coupling ends from dirt and damage.
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle. Leave the vehicle on the hoist.
  20.  
  21. Remove the clutch master cylinder reservoir push-in fasteners.
  22.  
  23. Rotate the clutch master cylinder clockwise 45 degrees.
  24.  
  25. Release the clutch master cylinder from the dash panel.
  26.  
  27. Remove the clutch master cylinder and reservoir from the vehicle.
  28.  

To install:

  1. Install the clutch master cylinder and the reservoir into position.
  2.  
  3. Install the clutch master cylinder to the dash panel.
  4.  
  5. Orientate the clutch master cylinder at a 45 degree angle.
  6.  
  7. Insert the clutch master cylinder into the dash panel.
  8.  
  9. Rotate the master cylinder counterclockwise to secure. DO NOT over-rotate the master cylinder.
  10.  
  11. Install the clutch master cylinder reservoir into position.
  12.  
  13. Install the clutch master cylinder reservoir push-in fasteners.
  14.  
  15. Install the windshield washer solvent container.
  16.  
  17. Raise the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Connect the clutch actuator cylinder hose to the clutch master cylinder hose. Push together the clutch hydraulic hose quick connect fittings, then pull back on the fittings to verify engagement.
  20.  
  21. Check the clutch hydraulic hoses for twists or kinks.
  22.  
  23. Install the clutch actuator cylinder hose to the hose retaining clip, at the rear of the engine.
  24.  
  25. Lower the vehicle.
  26.  
  27. Install the clutch master cylinder rod to the clutch pedal.
  28.  
  29. Install the clutch master cylinder rod retainer.
  30.  
  31. Install the left lower insulator panel.
  32.  
  33. Connect the negative battery cable.
  34.  
  35. Bleed the clutch hydraulic system.
  36.  


WARNING
The clutch hydraulic system uses brake fluid to control hydraulic operation. Never reuse brake fluid. Any brake fluid that is removed from the system should be discarded. Also, do not allow any brake fluid to come in contact with a painted surface; it will damage the paint.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  3. Remove the left instrument panel lower insulator panel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the clutch master cylinder rod retainer.
  6.  
  7. Remove the clutch master cylinder rod from the clutch pedal.
  8.  
  9. Remove the windshield washer solvent container.
  10.  
  11. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the clutch actuator cylinder hose from the hose retaining clip, at the rear of the engine.
  14.  
  15. Using a Clutch Line Separator J-36221, depress the white circular release ring on the actuator hose and simultaneously pull lightly on the master cylinder hose to disconnect.
  16.  
  17. Protect both hose coupling ends from dirt and damage.
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle. Leave the vehicle on the hoist.
  20.  
  21. Remove the clutch master cylinder reservoir push-in fasteners.
  22.  
  23. Rotate the clutch master cylinder clockwise 45 degrees.
  24.  
  25. Release the clutch master cylinder from the dash panel.
  26.  
  27. Remove the clutch master cylinder and reservoir from the vehicle.
  28.  

To install:

  1. Install the clutch master cylinder and the reservoir into position.
  2.  
  3. Install the clutch master cylinder to the dash panel.
    1. Orientate the clutch master cylinder at a 45 degree angle.
    2.  
    3. Insert the clutch master cylinder into the dash panel.
    4.  
    5. Rotate the master cylinder counterclockwise to secure. DO NOT over-rotate the master cylinder.

  5. Install the clutch master cylinder reservoir into position.
  6.  
  7. Install the clutch master cylinder reservoir push-in fasteners.
  8.  
  9. Install the windshield washer solvent container.
  10.  
  11. Raise the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Connect the clutch actuator cylinder hose to the clutch master cylinder hose. Push together the clutch hydraulic hose quick connect fittings, then pull back on the fittings to verify engagement.
  14.  
  15. Check the clutch hydraulic hoses for twists or kinks.
  16.  
  17. Install the clutch actuator cylinder hose to the hose retaining clip, at the rear of the engine.
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Install the clutch master cylinder rod to the clutch pedal.
  22.  
  23. Install the clutch master cylinder rod retainer.
  24.  
  25. Install the left lower insulator panel.
  26.  
  27. Connect the negative battery cable.
  28.  
  29. Bleed the clutch hydraulic system.
  30.
