Cooling Fan Connectors



Removal & Installation
5.7L V8 Engines
  1. Remove the cooling fan after removing the fan shroud.
  2.  
  3. Remove the fan motor bolts.
  4.  
  5. Remove the fan motor from the shroud.
  6.  
  7. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Tighten the fan motor bolts to 6 Nm (53 inch lbs.).
  8.  

6.0L V8 Engines
  1. Disconnect the cooling fan electrical connector.
  2.  
  3. Vehicles equipped with transmission fluid cooler, disconnect the lower transmission oil cooler line from the radiator.
  4.  
  5. Vehicles equipped with an engine oil cooler, disconnect the upper and lower engine oil cooler pipes.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cooling fan shroud retaining bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the cooling fan and shroud.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the cooling fan and shroud.
  2.  
  3. Install the cooling fan shroud retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts to 5 Nm (44 inch lbs.).
  4.  
  5. Vehicles equipped with transmission fluid cooler, Connect the lower transmission oil cooler line to the radiator.
  6.  
  7. On vehicles equipped with an engine oil cooler, connect the upper and lower engine oil cooler pipes.
  8.  
  9. Connect the cooling fan electrical connector.
  10.  
  11. Install the stabilizer shaft.
  12.  
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Connect the surge tank outlet hose to the retaining clips on the cooling fan shroud.
  16.  
  17. Connect the engine wiring harness to the cooling fan shroud.
  18.  
  19. Install the radiator support.
  20.

Removal & Installation

This vehicle uses a Cooling Fan Control Module located on the cooling fan shroud.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the cooling fan control module electrical connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the cooling fan control module retaining bolt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cooling fan control module from the vehicle.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the cooling fan control module to the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Install the cooling fan control module retaining bolt.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the bolt to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the cooling fan control module electrical connector.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10.  

Testing
Circuit Operation

The cooling fan of this vehicle is controlled by the Cooling Fan Control Module located on the cooling fan shroud.

Cooling system description and operation:



Cooling fan duty cycle starts when engine coolant temperature reaches approximately204°F (95°C) and reaches high speed at temperatures above 235°F (113°C).
 
Cooling fan duty cycle starts when A/C pressure reaches approximately 160 psi (1100 kPa) and reaches high speed at A/C pressures above 360 psi (2480 kPa).
 
At engine oil temperatures above approximately 302°F (150°C) the cooling fan duty cycle will be commanded to high speed.
 
At transmission oil temperatures above approximately 270°F (132°C) the cooling fan duty cycle will be commanded to high speed.
 
After the vehicle is shut OFF if the engine coolant temperature at key-off is greater than 235°F (113°C) or the A/C pressure is greater than 249 psi (1720 kPa) the cooling fan duty cycle is set to 50%,low speed. If the coolant temperature drops below 230°F (110°C) and the A/C pressure drops below 241 psi (1660 kPa) the fan will shut OFF. The fans will automatically shut OFF after 2 min. regardless of coolant temperature.
 

Circuit Testing
  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the Fan Control Module.

  3. Ignition OFF, test for less than 1.0 ohm of resistance between the ground circuit and ground.
    1. If greater than 1.0 ohm, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
    2.

  5. Ignition ON, test for B+ between the battery positive voltage circuit and ground.
    1. If less than B+, test the battery positive voltage circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
    2.  
    3. If the COOLFAN fuse is open, test battery positive voltage circuit for a short to ground.
    4.  

  6.  
  7. With a digital multi-meter, test for B+ between the B+ circuit terminal 3 and the control circuit terminal 6.
    1. If less than B+, test the control circuit for and open/high resistance.
    2.  
    3. If the circuit tests normal replace the ECM.
    4.  

  8.  
  9. Test for 1.5-.5 ohms of resistance between the low reference terminal 1 and supply voltage terminal 4.
    1. If not within specified value, test and replace the cooling fan.
    2.  

  10.  
  11. If all circuits test normal, test and replace the cooling fan control module.
  12.  

Removal & Installation



5.7L Engine
  1. Remove the fan shroud.
  2.  
  3. Remove the cooling fan blade nut.
  4.  
  5. Remove the cooling fan blade.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the cooling fan blade.
  2.  
  3. Install the cooling fan blade nut and tighten to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the fan shroud.
  6.  

6.0L Engine
  1. Remove the radiator support.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the cooling fan shroud.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the surge tank outlet hose from the retaining clips on the cooling fan shroud and position aside.
  6.  
  7. Raise and support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the stabilizer bar.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the cooling fan electrical connector.
  12.  
  13. Vehicles equipped with transmission fluid cooler, disconnect the lower transmission oil cooler line from the radiator.
  14.  
  15. Vehicles equipped with an engine oil cooler, disconnect the upper and lower engine oil cooler pipes.
  16.  
  17. Remove the cooling fan shroud retaining bolts.
  18.  
  19. Remove the cooling fan and shroud.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Install the cooling fan and shroud.
  2.  
  3. Install the cooling fan shroud retaining bolts and tighten to 44 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Vehicles equipped with transmission fluid cooler, Connect the lower transmission oil cooler line to the radiator.
  6.  
  7. Vehicles equipped with an engine oil cooler, Connect the upper and lower engine oil cooler pipes.
  8.  
  9. Connect the cooling fan electrical connector.
  10.  
  11. Install the stabilizer bar.
  12.  
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Connect the surge tank outlet hose to the retaining clips on the cooling fan shroud.
  16.  
  17. Connect the engine wiring harness to the cooling fan shroud.
  18.  
  19. Install the radiator support.
  20.
