Removal & Installation




NOTE
The rear main seal is a 1-piece unit. It can be removed or installed without removing the oil pan or crankshaft.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transmission
     
    Clutch and pressure plate, if equipped with a manual transmission
     
    Flywheel inspection cover
     
    Flywheel
     

  4.  
  5. Using a prytool, carefully pry the old seal out.

To install:

  1. Inspect the crankshaft for nicks or burrs, correct as required.
  2.  
  3. Clean the area and coat the seal and crankshaft with engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Seal, using a seal installer
     
    Flywheel and torque the bolts in sequence to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) then to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) and finally to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm)
     
    Flywheel inspection cover and torque the bolts 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    Clutch and pressure plate if equipped with a manual transmission
     
    Transmission
     

  6.  
  7. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  8.  


NOTE

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Clutch and pressure plate, if equipped with a manual transmission
     
    Flywheel inspection cover
     
    Flywheel

  5. Using a pry tool, carefully pry the old seal out.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install Crankshaft seal installer J-41479 cone and bolts onto the rear of the crankshaft.

  3. Tighten the bolts until snug. Do not overtighten.
  4.  
  5. Install the rear oil seal onto the tapered cone until the tool contacts the oil seal.
  6.  
  7. Thread the threaded rod into the tapered cone until the tool contacts the oil seal.
  8.  
  9. Align the oil seal onto the tool.
    NOTE
    Inspect the seal and identify the part number markings for proper orientation.

  10.  
  11. Rotate the handle of the tool clockwise until the seal enters the rear cover and bottoms into the cover bore.
  12.  
  13. Remove the tool.
  14.  
  15. Install the engine flywheel, refer to Flywheel/ Flexplate section.
  16.  
  17. Install the transmission, refer to transmission section.
  18.
