Rocker Arms

Removal & Installation



Left Side

NOTE
Always keep the rocker arms and pushrods in order so they can be installed in their original positions.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    If removing more than 1 rocker arm, be sure to keep them in order. They must be installed in their original positions.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Left fuel rail cover
     
    Fuel line from the fuel rail
     
    Alternator and Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connectors
     
    Secondary Air Injection (AIR) hose from the check valve
     
    Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve pipe from the left valve rocker arm cover
     
    Spark plug wires from the coils
     
    Main ignition coil connector
     
    Lines from the Evaporative (EVAP) emissions purge solenoid
     
    Solenoid valve
     
    Rocker arm cover
     
    Rocker arm
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. If removed, install the rocker arm pivot support.
  2.  
  3. Lubricate the rocker arms and pushrods with clean engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Lubricate the flange and washer surface of the rocker arm mounting bolts.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Pushrod. Be sure it is seated in the lifter socket
     
    Rocker arms but do not tighten the bolts at this time
     

  8.  
  9. Rotate the crankshaft so the No. 1 piston is at Top Dead Center (TDC).
  10.  
  11. With the engine in this position, tighten the exhaust valve rocker arm bolts on cylinders No. 1, 2, 7 and 8. Then, tighten the intake valve rocker arm bolts on cylinders No. 1, 3, 4 and 5. Torque the bolts to 22 ft. lbs. 30 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Rotate the crankshaft 1 revolution (360 degrees).
  14.  
  15. With the engine in this position, tighten the exhaust valve rocker arm bolts on cylinders No. 3, 4, 5 and 6. Then, tighten the intake valve rocker arm bolts on cylinders No. 2, 6, 7 and 8. Tighten the bolts to 22 ft. lbs. 30 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install or connect the following:

    Rocker arm Cover using a new gasket. Torque the bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
     
    EVAP purge solenoid
     
    Ignition coil connector
     
    AIR hose to the check valve
     
    Spark plug wires to the ignition coils
     
    Ignition coil main harness electrical connector
     
    Alternator and ECT sensor connectors
     
    Fuel line to the fuel rail
     
    PCV valve pipe to the left valve rocker arm cover
     
    Fuel rail cover
     

  18.  
  19. Negative battery cable.
  20.  
  21. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  22.  

Right Side

NOTE
If the oil fill tube is removed from the rocker arm cover, a new tube must be installed during assembly.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Right side fuel rail cover
     

  4.  
  5. Secondary Air Injection (AIR) hose from the exhaust manifold in the following sequence:
    1. Bolts.
    2.  
    3. Pipe.
    4.  
    5. Gasket.
    6.  

  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Always keep the rocker arms and pushrods in order so they can be installed in their original positions.



    Secondary Air Injection (AIR) hose from the check valve
     
    Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hoses from the breather pipes
     
    Spark plug wires from the ignition coils
     
    Ignition coil main wire harness connector
     
    Valve rocker arm cover
     

  8.  
  9. Remove the rocker arm. If removing more than 1 rocker arm, be sure to keep them in order. They must be installed in their original positions.
  10.  

To install:

  1. If removed, install the rocker arm pivot support.
  2.  
  3. Lubricate the rocker arms and pushrods with clean engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Lubricate the flange and washer surface of the bolt rocker arm mounting bolts.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Pushrod. Be sure it is seated in the lifter socket
     
    Rocker arms but do not tighten the bolts at this time
     

  8.  
  9. Rotate the crankshaft so the No. 1 piston is at Top Dead Center (TDC) on compression.
  10.  
  11. With the engine in this position, tighten the exhaust valve rocker arm bolts on cylinders No. 2 and 8. Then, tighten the intake valve rocker arm bolts on cylinder No. 4. Torque the bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Rotate the crankshaft 1 revolution (360 degrees).
  14.  
  15. With the engine in this position, tighten the exhaust valve rocker arm bolts on cylinders No. 4 and 6. Then, tighten the intake valve rocker arm bolts on cylinders No. 2, 6 and 8. Tighten the bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install or connect the following:

    Rocker arm cover using a new gasket. Tighten the bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
     
    Ignition coil main wire harness connector
     
    Spark plug wires to the ignition coils
     
    PCV hoses to the breather pipes
     
    AIR hose to the check valve
     
    AIR hose to the exhaust manifold
     
    Right side fuel rail cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  18.  
  19. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  20.
