Shock Absorbers

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Wheel
     
    Real Time Damper (RTD) electrical connector, if equipped
     
    Upper mounting nut retainer and insulator
     
    Shock absorber lower mounting bolts
     
    Shock absorber from the upper tower
     

  4.  
  5. If equipped with heavy duty shocks (FE3) or Magnetic Selective Ride Control (F55) perform the following steps:
    1. Compress the shock absorber from the bottom upward.
    2.  
    3. Install a shock support tool to the shock while it is compressed.
    4.  
    5. Remove the shock from the vehicle.
    6.  
    7. Remove the tool from the shock.
    8.  

  6.  
  7. Remove the shock absorber.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Retainer and insulator to the shock absorber
     
    Shock absorber to the upper shock tower
     
    Upper insulator, retainer and nut and torque the nut to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm)
     
    Lower mounting bolts and torque them to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm)
     
    RTD electrical connector
     

  2.  
  3. If equipped with heavy duty shocks (FE3) or Magnetic Selective Ride Control (F55) perform the following steps:
    1. Install a shock support tool to the shock absorber.
    2.  
    3. Install the shock to the vehicle.
    4.  
    5. Install the upper insulator, retainer and nut and torque the nut to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Remove the support tool from the shock and install a spring compressor to the spring.
    8.

  5. Raise the lower control arm and install the shock absorber lower mounting bolts and torque them to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Remove the spring compressor tool.
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  10.  

With Heavy Duty Shocks (FE3 Suspension)
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    NOTE
    The following tools are required for removal:



    J-33432-A Leaf Spring Compressor or equivalent
     
    J-43822 Shock Remover/Installer or equivalent
     

  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:


  4.  
  5. Negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Raise the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the electronic suspension control electrical connector from the shock, if equipped.
  12.  
  13. Remove the upper mounting nut, insulator retainer, and insulator.
  14.  
  15. Using a pry bar compress the shock absorber from the bottom upward.
  16.  
  17. Install the J-43822 to the shock absorber while the shock is compressed.
  18.  
  19. Remove the shock absorber from the shock tower and the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Remove J-43822 from the shock absorber.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Install the J-43822 to the shock absorber.
  2.  
  3. Install the shock absorber into the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Install the upper insulator, retainer, and nut.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the shock absorber upper mounting nut to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Remove J-43822 from the shock absorber.
  10.  
  11. Install J-33432-A to the spring and compress.
  12.  
  13. Raise the lower control arm and install the shock absorber lower mounting bolts and nuts.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the shock absorber lower mounting nuts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Remove J-33432-A from the spring.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the electronic suspension control electrical connector from the shock, if equipped.
  20.  
  21. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  22.  
  23. Lower the vehicle.
  24.  

With Selective Ride Control
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Wheel
     
    Real Time Damper (RTD) electrical connector from the shock absorber
     
    Upper mounting nut retainer and insulator
     
    Shock absorber lower mounting bolts
     
    Shock absorber from the upper tower
     

  4.  
  5. If equipped with heavy duty shocks (FE3) perform the following steps:
    1. Step 1: Compress the shock absorber from the bottom upward.
    2.  
    3. Step 2: Install a shock support tool to the shock while it is compressed.
    4.  
    5. Step 3: Remove the shock from the vehicle.
    6.  
    7. Step 4: Remove the tool from the shock.
    8.  

  6.  
  7. Remove the shock absorber.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Retainer and insulator to the shock absorber
     
    Shock absorber to the upper shock tower
     
    Upper insulator, retainer and nut. Torque the nut to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
     
    Lower mounting bolt. Torque the bolt to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
     
    RTD electrical connector
     

  2.  
  3. If equipped with heavy duty shocks (FE3) perform the following steps:
    1. Step 1: Install a shock support tool to the shock absorber.
    2.  
    3. Step 2: Install the shock to the vehicle.
    4.  
    5. Step 3: Install the upper insulator, retainer and nut. Torque the nut to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Step 4: Remove the support tool from the shock and install a spring compressor to the spring.
    8.

  5. Step 5: Raise the lower control arm and install the shock absorber lower mounting bolts. Torque the bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
    1. Step 6: Remove the spring compressor tool.
    2.  

  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  

Without Heavy Duty Shocks (FE3 Suspension)
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    NOTE
    The following tools are required for removal:



    J-33432-A Leaf Spring Compressor or equivalent
     
    J-43822 Shock Remover/Installer or equivalent

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:


  4.  
  5. Negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Raise the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the electronic suspension control electrical connector from the shock, if equipped.
  12.  
  13. Remove the upper mounting nut, insulator retainer, and insulator.
  14.  
  15. Remove the shock absorber lower mounting bolts and nuts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the shock absorber from the upper shock tower and the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Remove the insulator and retainer from shock absorber.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Install the retainer and insulator to the shock absorber.
  2.  
  3. Install the shock absorber to the upper shock tower.
  4.  
  5. Install the upper insulator, retainer, and nut.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the shock absorber upper mounting nut to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the shock absorber lower mounting bolts and nuts.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the shock absorber lower mounting nuts to 21ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Connect the electronic suspension control electrical connector to the shock, if equipped.
  14.  
  15. Remove J-33432-A from the spring.
  16.  
  17. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20.  

Without Selective Ride Control
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Wheel
     
    Shock absorber from the lower control arm and the shock tower. If necessary, remove the front wheel housing lower center panel to access the upper mount nut
     
    Insulator and retainers from the shock absorber
     

  4.  
  5. If equipped with heavy duty shocks (FE3) perform the following steps:
    1. Step 1: Compress the shock absorber from the bottom upward.
    2.  
    3. Step 2: Install a shock support tool to the shock while it is compressed.
    4.  
    5. Step 3: Remove the shock from the vehicle.
    6.  
    7. Step 4: Remove the tool from the shock.
    8.  

  6.  
  7. Remove the shock absorber.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Retainer and insulator to the shock absorber
     
    Shock absorber to the upper shock tower
     
    Upper insulator, retainer and nut. Torque the nut to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
     
    Lower mounting bolt. Torque the bolt to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
     

  2.  
  3. If equipped with heavy duty shocks (FE3), perform the following steps:
    1. Step 1: Install a shock support tool to the shock absorber.
    2.  
    3. Step 2: Install the shock to the vehicle.
    4.  
    5. Step 3: Install the upper insulator, retainer and nut. Torque the nut to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Step 4: Remove the support tool from the shock and install a spring compressor to the spring.
    8.  
    9. Step 5: Raise the lower control arm and install the shock absorber lower mounting bolts. Torque the bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
    10.  
    11. Step 6: Remove the spring compressor tool.
    12.  

  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.
