Steering Knuckle

Removal & Installation



  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the brake caliper and rotor.
  4.  
  5. Remove the stabilizer shaft link from the lower control arm.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
  8.  
  9. Support the lower control arm using a jackstand.
  10.  
  11. Separate the steering linkage outer tie rod ball stud from the steering knuckle using separator.
  12.  
  13. Separate and remove the upper control arm ball joint stud from the steering knuckle using a separator.
  14.  
  15. Separate and remove the lower ball joint stud from the steering knuckle.
  16.  
  17. Remove the steering knuckle from the vehicle.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Install steering knuckle to the upper control arm and the lower control arm.
  2.  
  3. Remove the jackstand.
  4.  
  5. Install the steering linkage outer tie rod ball stud to the steering knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Install the stabilizer shaft link to the lower control arm and tighten to 53 ft. lbs. (72 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
  10.  
  11. Install the brake rotor and caliper.
  12.  
  13. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  14.  
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Check the front wheel toe and adjust as necessary.
  18.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Brake caliper
     
    Brake rotor
     
    Stabilizer shaft link from the lower control arm
     
    Wheel Speed Sensor (WSS) electrical connector
     
    Outer tie rod from the steering knuckle
     
    Upper ball joint from the steering knuckle using Ball Joint Separator J-42188 or equivalent
     
    Steering knuckle from the vehicle
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Steering knuckle
     
    Upper ball joint to the steering knuckle and torque the nut to 20 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) plus an additional 225 degree turn
     
    Lower ball joint to the steering knuckle and torque the nut to 20 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) plus an additional 180 degree turn
     
    Outer tie rod to the steering knuckle and torque the nut to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) plus an additional 160 degree turn
     
    Stabilizer shaft link to the control arm and torque the nut to 53 ft. lbs. (72 Nm)
     
    WSS electrical connector
     
    Brake rotor
     
    Brake caliper and torque the mounting bracket bolts to 129 ft. lbs. (175 Nm)
     
    Wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Check and adjust the front alignment.
  4.
