Transverse Spring

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front wheels

  4.  
  5. Measure the front spring adjuster bolt gap to ease the installation procedure and setting the proper vehicle trim height.
  6.  
  7. Install a spring compressor tool J 33432-A to the spring and compress it.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Lower shock absorber mounting bolts from one of the lower control arms
     
    Stabilizer shaft link from the lower control arm
     
    Lower ball joint from the steering knuckle
     
    Cam bolts from the lower control arm after matchmarking them
     
    Lower control arm
     
    Transverse spring bolts and retainers
     
    Transverse spring and the compressor tool

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Spring to the crossmember
     
    New spring retainers and bolts to the crossmember and torque them to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm)
     
    Lower control arm to the crossmember
     
    Cam bolts to the matchmarks made during the removal procedure. Hand-tighten the cam bolts at this time
     
    Lower control arm ball joint stud to the steering knuckle and torque the nut to 20 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) plus an additional 180 degrees
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Shock absorber lower mounting bolts and torque them to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm)
     
    Stabilizer shaft link to the lower control arm and torque the nut to 53 ft. lbs. (72 Nm)
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the spring compressor tool from the transverse spring and move the lower control arm supports.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Front wheels
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Adjust the front trim height.
  8.  
  9. Perform a front end alignment.
  10.  
  11. Torque the control arm cam bolts to 125 ft. lbs. (170 Nm)
  12.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front wheels

  4.  
  5. Measure the front spring adjuster bolt gap to ease the installation procedure and setting the proper vehicle trim height.
  6.  
  7. Install a spring compressor tool J-33432-A to the spring and compress it.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Do not remove the transverse leaf spring compressor tool until after the shock absorber has been installed. The pad on the transverse leaf spring bolt could move out of position resulting in damage to the pad or a rattle in the suspension.



    Lower shock absorber mounting bolts from one of the lower control arms
     
    Stabilizer shaft link from the lower control arm
     
    Lower ball joint from the steering knuckle
     
    Cam bolts from the lower control arm after matchmarking them
     
    Lower control arm
     
    Transverse spring bolts and retainers
     
    Transverse spring and the compressor tool

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Spring to the crossmember
     
    New spring retainers and bolts to the crossmember and torque them to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm)
     
    Lower control arm to the crossmember
     
    Align cam bolts to the matchmarks made during the removal procedure. Hand-tighten the cam bolts at this time
     
    Lower control arm ball joint stud to the steering knuckle and torque the nut to 20 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) plus an additional 180 degrees
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Shock absorber lower mounting bolts and torque them to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm)
     
    Stabilizer shaft link to the lower control arm and torque the nut to 53 ft. lbs. (72 Nm)
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the spring compressor tool from the transverse spring and move the lower control arm supports.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Front wheels
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Adjust the front trim height.
  8.  
  9. Perform a front end alignment.
  10.  
  11. Torque the control arm cam bolts to 125 ft. lbs. (170 Nm).
  12.
