Parking Brake Shoes

Adjustment



  1. Apply and fully release the parking brake three times.
  2.  
  3. Verify that the parking brake lever releases completely.
  4.  
  5. Turn ON the ignition. Verify that the red BRAKE warning indicator lamp is off.
  6.  
  7. Turn OFF the ignition.
  8.  
  9. Raise and support the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear tire and wheel assemblies.
    NOTE
    Do not operate the park brake lever with the rear disc brake rotor removed.

  13. Remove the rear disc brake rotors
  14.  
  15. Place the inside measurement contacts of the Shoe Clearance Gauge J-21177-A at the widest point of the drum portion of the brake rotor.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the set screw on the tool in order to ensure the proper measurement when removing the tool from the drum.
  18.  
  19. Position the outside measurement contacts of the tool over the park brake shoe at the widest point.
    NOTE
    If the gap between the adjuster nut and the adjuster screw exceeds 0.25 inch (5 mm) during the adjustment procedure, the park brake shoe must be replaced.

  20.  
  21. Adjust the park brake shoe-to-drum clearance by rotating the adjustment nut on the park brake actuator. Correct specifications is 0.015 inch (0.38 mm).

  23. Install the rear brake rotors.
  24.  
  25. Install the rear tire and wheel assemblies.
  26.  
  27. Apply and release the park brake lever three times.
  28.  
  29. Apply the park brake lever. Inspect the rotation of the rear wheels: the wheels should not rotate forward, drag, or rotate rearward.
  30.  
  31. If the rear tire and wheel assemblies rotate forward or do not exhibit drag rearward, repeat the adjustment procedure.
  32.  
  33. Release the parking lever. Verify that the wheels rotate freely.
  34.  
  35. Lower the vehicle.
  36.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheels.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake rotor.
  6.  
  7. Remove the wheel bearing/hub.
  8.  
  9. Rotate the parking brake adjusting nut until all park brake shoe adjustment has been removed.
  10.  
  11. Remove the parking brake shoe retaining spring.
  12.  
  13. Remove the park brake shoe assembly by grasping the shoe and spreading slightly while pulling the shoe from the actuator assembly.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install the park brake shoe assembly by grasping the shoe and spreading slightly while pulling the shoe over the actuator assembly.
  2.  
  3. Install the parking brake shoe retaining spring.
  4.  
  5. Adjust the parking brake shoe-to-drum clearance.
  6.  
  7. Install the wheel bearing/hub.
  8.  
  9. Install the brake rotor.
  10.  
  11. Install the wheels.
  12.
