Upper Ball Joints

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Wheel Speed Sensor (WSS) electrical connector
     
    Real Time Damping (RTD) position sensor, if equipped
     
    Brake caliper
     
    Brake rotor
     
    Shock absorber solenoid electrical connector, if equipped
     
    Outer tie rod from the suspension knuckle
     
    Axle shaft nut
     
    Upper control arm from the knuckle
     
    Lower ball joint from the knuckle
     
    Suspension knuckle from the vehicle
     

  4.  
  5. Press the upper ball joint from the knuckle.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Press the ball joint into the suspension knuckle.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Knuckle to the vehicle
     
    Lower ball joint to the knuckle and torque the nut to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm)
     
    Upper control arm to the knuckle and torque the nut to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) plus an additional 250 degree turn
     
    Axle shaft nut and torque it to 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm)
     
    Outer tie rod to the knuckle and torque the nut to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) plus an additional 160 degree turn
     
    Brake rotor
     
    Brake caliper and torque the mounting bracket bolts to 125 ft. lbs. (175 Nm)
     
    WSS electrical connector
     
    Shock absorber solenoid electrical connector, if equipped
     
    RTD position sensor, if equipped
     
    Wheel
     

  4.  
  5. Check and adjust the rear wheel alignment.
  6.
