Upper Control Arms

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Rear wheel
     
    Wheel Speed Sensor (WSS) electrical connector
     
    Real Time Damping (RTD) position sensor link, if equipped
     

  4.  
  5. Support the lower control arm with a jack stand.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Ball joint stud from the control arm
     
    Upper control arm bolts
     
    Upper control arm
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Upper control arm and torque the bolts to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)
     
    Suspension knuckle ball joint stud nut into the upper control arm. It may be necessary to use an Allen wrench to keep the ball joint stud from spinning while tightening the ball joint stud nut. Torque the nut to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) plus an additional 195 degrees
     
    WSS electrical connector
     
    RTD position sensor link, if equipped
     
    Rear wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Check and adjust the rear wheel alignment.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Rear wheel
     
    Suspension position link, if equipped
     
    Transverse spring from the lower control arm
     
    Shock absorber from the lower control arm
     
    Lower ball joint stud nut from the knuckle using Ball Joint Separator J-42188 or equivalent
     
    Stabilizer shaft link from the lower control arm
     
    Cam bolts, washers and nuts after matchmarking them
     
    Lower control arm from the vehicle
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm
     
    Cam bolts to the position matchmarked during the removal procedure and hand-tighten the bolts
     
    Lower ball joint stud to the steering knuckle and torque the nut to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) plus an additional 180 degrees
     
    Stabilizer shaft link to the lower control arm and torque the link nut to 53 ft. lbs. (72 Nm)
     
    Shock absorber lower mounting bolts and torque the bolts to 107 ft. lbs. (145 Nm)
     
    Transverse spring to the lower control arm
     
    Rear wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Perform a rear wheel alignment.
  4.  
  5. Torque the lower control arm front cam bolt to 107 ft. lbs. (145 Nm) and the rear cam bolt to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  6.  

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the electronic suspension control sensor link.
  8.  
  9. Separate the suspension knuckle (1) from the upper control arm using J-42188.
  10.  
  11. Support the lower control arm with a jack stand.
  12.  
  13. Loosen the upper ball joint stud nut, but do not remove the nut.
  14.  
  15. Remove J-42188 and the ball joint stud nut (2) from the ball joint stud.
  16.  
  17. Remove the bolts retaining the upper control arm to the frame.
  18.  
  19. On Z06 models perform the following:
    1. Remove the limiter Brackets.
    2.  
    3. Remove Upper Control Arm Washers, making certain to note position of washers .
    4.  

  20.  
  21. Remove the upper control arm from the vehicle.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Install the upper control arm to the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. On Z06 models perform the following:
    1. Install Upper Control Arm Washers, in their original locations as noted above.
      NOTE
      Note the following when installing the washers:



      The washer without insert MUST be positioned closest to the control arm
       
      The washer with insert MUST be positioned closest to the frame
       
      Ensure that only ONE washer with a retaining insert is used on each control arm bolt
       
      The upper control washers will effect caster and camber. Make sure to use a equal number of washers on both sides of each upper control arm bushing.
       

    2.  
    3. Install the limiter Brackets.
      NOTE
      The limiter brackets must be installed on the inboard side of the rear upper control arm bushings.

  5. Install the upper control arm mounting bolts and to the frame.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the upper control arm mounting bolts as follows:

    Without Z60: 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)
     
    With Z60: 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm)
     

  8.  
  9. Install the suspension knuckle upper ball joint stud into the upper control arm. It may be necessary to use an allen wrench to keep the ball joint stud from spinning while tightening the ball joint stud nut.
  10.  
  11. Install the upper ball joint stud nut.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the suspension knuckle ball joint stud nut as follows:

    Without Z60: 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) plus 195 degrees
     
    With Z60: 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) plus 195 degrees
     

  14.  
  15. Connect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
  16.  
  17. Connect the electronic suspension control sensor link.
  18.  
  19. Remove the jack stand from the lower control arm.
  20.  
  21. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  22.  
  23. Lower the vehicle.
  24.  
  25. Perform a rear wheel alignment.
  26.
