Spark Plug Wires

Inspection




NOTE
Spark plug wire integrity is vital for proper engine operation. A thorough inspection will be necessary to accurately identify conditions that may affect engine operation. Inspect for the following conditions:

  1. Correct routing of the spark plug wires. Incorrect routing may cause cross-firing.
  2.  
  3. Any signs of cracks or splits in the wires.
  4.  
  5. Inspect each boot for the following conditions:
    NOTE
    If corrosion, carbon tracking, or arcing are indicated on a spark plug wire boot or on a terminal, replace the wire and the component connected to the wire.



    Tearing
     
    Piercing
     
    Arcing
     
    Carbon tracking
     
    Corroded terminal
     

  6.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the spark plug wires at each spark plug as follows:
    1. Twist each spark plug boot 1 / 2 turn.
    2.  
    3. Pull only on the boot in order to remove the wire from each spark plug.
    4.  

  4.  
  5. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the ignition coil as follows:
    1. Twist each spark plug boot 1 / 2 turn.
    2.  
    3. Pull only on the boot in order to remove the wires from the ignition coil.
    4.  

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the spark plug wires at the ignition coil.
  2.  
  3. Install the spark plug wire to each spark plug.
  4.  
  5. Inspect the wires for proper installation:
    1. Push sideways on each boot in order to inspect the seating.
    2.  
    3. Reinstall any loose boot.
    4.  

  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
