Removal & Installation

  1. Disable the SIR system for zone 3. Refer to the Chassis Electrical Section.

  3. On the back side of the steering wheel there is 4 openings to access the fasteners securing the steering wheel module.
  4.  
  5. Insert a 3.175 mm (1/8  inch) diameter blunt ended punch or equivalent tool into each of the holes and push in order to release the spring fastener securing the module to the steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. Pull the inflatable restraint module gently away from the steering wheel.
    NOTE
    Note the wire routing positions on the steering wheel module connectors, the redundant control routing positions, and the horn wire routing positions for the correct assembly.

  9. Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) and the electrical connector from the steering wheel module.
  10.  
  11. Remove the horn contact lead from the steering column cam tower.
  12.  
  13. Remove the steering wheel module.
  14.  
  15. Remove the horn electrical connector.
  16.  
  17. Install Steering Column Lock Pin J-42640 to the steering column.
  18.  
  19. Remove the steering wheel set nut.
  20.  
  21. Discard the steering wheel set nut.
  22.  
  23. Install a puller to the steering wheel.
  24.  
  25. Tighten the puller center screw against steering column shaft until the steering wheel slides off the steering column shaft.
  26.  
  27. Remove the puller.
  28.  

To install:

  1. Install the steering wheel to the steering column, observing the alignment marks.
  2.  
  3. Install a new steering wheel set nut and tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering column lock pin.
  6.  
  7. Connect the horn electrical connector.
  8.  
  9. Connect the horn contact lead into the steering column cam tower.
  10.  
  11. Connect the steering wheel module electrical connector and the CPA.
    NOTE
    This vehicle may be equipped with dual stage air bags, you will find 2 connectors. Match the right color connector to the right color opening in the module. Route the steering wheel module wires, the redundant control wires, and the horn wires correctly.

  13. Align the steering wheel module fasteners to the steering wheel fastener holes.
  14.  
  15. Push the steering wheel module firmly into the steering wheel in order to engage the fasteners.
  16.  
  17. Enable the SIR system. Refer to the Chassis Electrical Section.
  18.  

  1. Disable the SIR system.
    1. Turn the steering wheel so that the vehicles wheels are pointing straight ahead.
    2.  
    3. Place the ignition in the OFF position.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery.
    6.  
    7. Wait 1 minute before working on system
    8.

  3. On the sides of the steering wheel are 2 circular openings, place the wheel so that one opening is on top.
  4.  
  5. Using a blunt-ended tool, push the spring fastener inward through the access hole. Repeat the step for the other opening.
  6.  
  7. Turn the steering wheel so that the vehicles wheels are pointing straight ahead.
  8.  
  9. Release the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  12.  
  13. Remove the inflator module.
    CAUTION
    Place the inflator module with the vinyl trim cover facing up and away from the surface on a work bench.

  15. Remove the steering wheel nut.
  16.  
  17. Make an alignment mark to note the relationship between the steering wheel and the steering shaft. The marks will be needed to align the wheel during installation.
  18.  
  19. Remove the steering wheel using J-1859-A Steering Wheel Puller with J-36541-A Steering Wheel Puller Legs.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Verify that the vehicle wheels are pointing straight ahead.
  2.  
  3. Install the steering wheel while aligning previously made marks.
  4.  
  5. Tighten nut to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the inflator module.
    1. Install the electrical connection.
    2.  
    3. Secure the mounting fasteners.
    4.  

  8.  
  9. Turn the steering wheel so that the vehicles wheels are pointing straight ahead.
  10.  
  11. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  12.
